A section of the Earth Simulator super computer at the Earth Simulator Center in Yokohama is shown as Japan plans to start ultra long-range 30 year weather forecasts next year. The forecasts aim to predict typhoons storms blizzards droughts and other adverse conditions.
A 23 month old boy, Phillip Redmond Jr., climbed from a second floor window and crossed porch roofs of at least eight row houses before neighbours and a German shepherd alerted authorities. Neighbour Shavyonn Robinson grabbed the child as he nearly fell, police said. He was taken to hospital. the father said it was his fault for underestimating the child’s reach.
Several trails along the South Saskatchewan River have reopened after high water. Open routes include Harris St 5.W. through Kiwanis Park Lions Park to Strathcona Island Park East end of Police Point and the trail south of the main office Riverside Trail from Trans Canada Highway to 5th Avenue N.W. and from 1st Street N.W. to 1st Street N.E. plus Maple Avenue bridge west side and Parkview Close trail.
The Alberta Access to the Future Fund will be managed by a nine member advisory council named by Advanced Education Minister Denis Herard. The council will review proposals, set application and evaluation processes, monitor outcomes, and report on activities while guiding seed funding and matching grants for innovative post-secondary projects. Herard calls the fund a lasting legacy for future students and a way to invest current resources in education for children and grandchildren.
Local Iraqis gather around wreckage after a car bombing near a Shiite shrine in Kufa 160 km south of Baghdad. Officials say 53 died and 105 were wounded as laborers stood across from the shrine.
The National Parole Board rejected Clifford Olson's bid for release. Olson, jailed for 11 murders in British Columbia, faced panel hearings at a Montreal area prison. Gary Rosenfeldt, whose stepson Caryn Johnsrude was Olson's third victim, described the emotional impact of the decision as relatives cried and harsh memories resurfaced.
A doctor and two nurses who worked during Katrina were arrested in New Orleans on charges of being principals to second-degree murder. Warrant claims they killed four Memorial Medical Center patients by lethal doses of morphine and midazolam. At least 34 patients died there in that period.
Kati Durst becomes the first of Canadian Idol’s Top 10 to be eliminated after her vote total for It Makes No Difference by The Band. The 26 year old Goderich Ontario resident, described as an easy going folk singer, choked back tears as she accepted the result with her rivals watching.
