Houston reports the Lunar Module settles on the moons surface at 4 19 EDT on Sunday July 20. Commanders call to go down and the crew prepares a 22 hour schedule to study the moon. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz Aldrin will conduct several tasks to learn as much as possible about the lunar environment.
The sequence begins with Aldrin and Armstrong inspecting Lunar Module systems for three hours. If landing damage occurs they may return to lunar orbit to rejoin the mother ship with Collins aboard. Armstrong narrates the moment as he descends the ladder and sets foot on the moon.
Premier Harry Strom pressed Prime Minister Trudeau to inject federal funds into the Prairie economy during a private meeting at Lacombe Alberta. He also renewed Alberta’s push for federal approval to move provincial petroleum into the Montreal market amid a broader focus on energy and trade. Mission control said all timings would be moved up accordingly.
Thor Heyerdahl and six crewmen abandon the reed Ra 600 miles from Barbados after shark scare while repairing broken papyrus ropes. They board the fishing craft Shenandoah and head toward Bridgetown while Ra drifts. Heyerdahl had hoped the voyage would prove ancient Egyptian seafaring to America.
A 24 year old St Boniface policeman was shot and killed while investigating a supermarket robbery in Winnipeg area. Two suspects were taken into custody after a daylong manhunt that involved RCMP and city police. a money bag haul was recovered and a police dog tracked a suspect along the Seine River.
MIAMI AP reports John Fairfax, 31, from Britain, is a few miles offshore in a 4000-mile Atlantic row. He radios he is coming in and asks for a contact number. A search party and reporters head from Fort Lauderdale to meet him as he predicts landfall this afternoon.
Jodrell Bank observers report Luna XV altered its orbit after two days circling the Moon. Sir Bernard Lovell announced the change as researchers plot the new trajectory while considering a possible return to Earth or a renewed lunar approach.
