Grain terminals closed as 97 per cent of workers vote for a strike to press for a $1.25 hourly rise on a $2.30 base. Talks with Lakehead Terminal Elevator Association resume, but walkout begins at 8 am EDT, delaying grain shipments from Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Local postal workers began picketing the Medicine Hat post office at 6 a.m. with a 30-person rally two hours later. Night shift walked off at 2 a.m. with six picketers per shift. Ken McLeod, CUPW local president, said lines are orderly and no one crossed. Headquarters set at 328 6th Ave. S.E. Picketing runs daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the strike.
Ottawa CP report mediation talks to end the national postal strike adjourned until Sunday after noon. About 24,000 postal workers prepared for the 5 a.m. EDT start as lines were mounted nationwide. The union rejected a 15 cent an hour raise while seeking 75 cents and fringe-benefit gains, with both sides hopeful for Sunday talks.
Defense Secretary Clark Clifford said the United States would continue bombing North Vietnam until Hanoi pledges reciprocal restraint. Front lines showed little action as Marines reported 77 North Vietnamese killed in two engagements south of the DMZ. Clifford briefed President Johnson on his Vietnam trip before flying to Honolulu.
A group of about 70 local retailers filed a petition with the City Clerk requesting adoption of an early closing bylaw. Lawyer Jim Horsman represents the petitioners and will present at Monday night's council meeting. Contents of the petition and agenda documents will be released by City Hall tomorrow.

The change is a non binding suggestion to be decided by referendum, with a party congress in September likely to rubber stamp the plan and sustain white minority rule.
The House approved by voice vote to consider President Johnson’s measure to ban mail order sales of rifles shotguns and ammunition. Montreal reports the Gazette learned from a Soviet embassy official that exploratory talks are under way between Canada and the USSR on wheat sales.
Prague's liberal Communist leadership pledges support from Yugoslavia Romania and Western Communist parties and rejects hardline calls to regain Stalinist controls. The presidium warns any move back to repressive methods will face overwhelming resistance from party members workers farmers and intellectuals while signaling readiness to discuss reforms bilaterally, potentially followed by a summit of all parties.
