The Bank of Canada raised its policy rate to 8.67 percent from 8.64 percent last week. The move tightens borrowing costs in Canada as inflation pressures persist.
Calgary police constable Roger Lowden pleaded guilty to 21 counts of robbery and one of using a firearm. He was sentenced to eight years in prison after a bank robbery under surveillance. Dubbed the Baseball Cap Bandit, he wept in court and apologized to victims and colleagues.
Heather Lee of Edmonton captured the Alberta Junior Women's Championship at Con naught Golf Club with a final round 81 and 54-hole total 237, three strokes ahead of Tiffany Gordon of High River. Gordon failed to hold a late lead. she carded 80 for 240 three days. Dianne Wilkins tied a course record with 75, finishing fourth tied with Alissa Lauder. Angie Monro shot 83 to finish just behind them. Jackie Twamley previously shot 75 at the provincial amateur championship last year in Connaught.
In early 1986, former Alberta superintendent of insurance Tewfik Saleh warned First Investors Corp and Associated Investors of Canada they lacked sufficient cash to cover liabilities.
