Western Canada Concept Party delegates convene in Red Deer seeking party unity and leadership by Aug. 21. Kesler presses for independence from central authorities and adopts referendum as a constitutional plank while planning a leadership vote if a snap election arises.
Knutson wins back membership at WCC convention in Red Deer with about 800 attendees voting by a large margin to restore his status. He aims to lead the party and push for western independence, noting a prior role with West-Fed and plans to influence policy. Other reinstated members include Christie Zubko Woodcock and Carr.
Calgary based Dome Petroleum heads a four company consortium that won a British Columbia contract to build a 1.7 billion dollar liquefied natural gas export terminal on the north coast. The plan includes a 550 million dollar pipeline to tidewater near Prince Rupert with deliveries to five Japanese buyers.

The United States and Saudi Arabia seek to end the Israel PLO crisis in Beirut. Syria resists accepting PLO fighters, while Israel warns of continued clashes as Habib plans another round of talks amid stalled negotiations over where the fighters will be dispersed. Two guerrillas were killed in eastern Lebanon.
