Sudbury reports the body of Marshall Johnson, an escaped inmate from Burwash industrial farm, recovered in Rock Lake near Paget. He apparently drowned after starting a bush fire to cover his escape. burns noted on the body.
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool reports a potential rebound this year with a larger harvest than 1935 if no further damage occurs. Last year yielded 135 million bushels. current crop condition at 67 percent. Heavy rains eased drought in many areas, though some regions may yield under ten bushels per acre. Government plans drought area survey and relief checks.
Six teen unemployed agitators who commandeered three street cars were fined five dollars each by Magistrate H. Graham in Winnipeg's city police court. Unable to pay, they receive seven days hard labor. Yesterday six other unemployed received ten dollar fines with ten days alternative for a snake walk.
Honorable Charles Dunning and Hon. W. D. Euler, Canadian ministers of finance and trade, were received today by the King at Buckingham Palace in London. They spent a brief audience after arriving two weeks ago for trade talks with British officials.
Ottawa reports that exports for the first three months of the fiscal year reached 220,424,738, up from 171,316,942 a year earlier. Imports totaled 159,133,021, with wheat shipments rising from 19,517,590 to 46,446,175. Tax collections also climbed, with income tax for the period at 66,134,762, up 11,570,152 from 1935.
Prime Minister Mackenzie King laid the cornerstone of the new French legation in Ottawa on Baguste Day. French official Raymond Brugere and others attended as King spoke of Franco Canadian ties and a united future free from old enmities, with France and Britain as comrades in peace.
Police investigate possible foul play in the death of 17 year old Caroline Hogg of Big Woody district near Swan River Manitoba. The body was found roadside by a passing farmer with bruises on head and neck. Last seen at baseball practice Monday night. Coroner Dr G E Burns adjourned the inquest after jurors viewed the body and post mortem results were not released.
District Engineer A C Gardner reports almost one mile of Hilda Schuler road rebuilt and prepared for graveling funded by scrip. Graveling to start in about a week with 12 four horse teams at work. progress described as good. Hat Elkwater road delays due to camping equipment shortages.
Cardinal Henri Charles Joseph Binet archbishop of Bescanton and first military chaplain in the Great War died in Bescannon, France. He was 57 and one of the youngest princes of the church in France.
In Cairo on July 15 a drunken sailor smashed glass in the Hydro Biological Institute laboratory releasing germs feared to trigger a plague outbreak. Panic spread as residents rushed to medical centers seeking vaccination.
Two Salter district farmers drowned while bathing in the North Saskatchewan river during a Saskatchewan picnic outing. George Anthouser, 28, and Nets Burgart, 29, died. Anthouser’s younger brother attempted rescues. wives of the brothers witnessed the tragedy. Bank of Canada head office construction to begin next spring, a four to five story building on Wellington Street costing at least 500000 with site already at 80000.
Firefighters in Sault Ste. Marie and across Ontario battled multiple blazes. More than 12,000 acres burned near Soo, with six square miles scorched at the Mississauga river area. Gusty winds fanned outbreaks as 700 men fought 32 fires in the Sudbury district.
