Medicine Hat Praised By Provincial Sanitary Engineer

Mr R B Owen provincial sanitary engineer inspected the sewage disposal and water works in Medicine Hat Calgary Lethbridge and Macleod and expressed satisfaction with how Medicine Hat handles the situation He noted the local funds were wisely laid out and contrasted it with other municipalities where funds were wasted He commented on pipe laying practice stating pipes must be laid with the boulder at the upper end to prevent creeping in hilly cold climates

Mr Owen outlined filtration challenges at Medicine Hat noting a mechanical system requires careful startup and precise alum dosing. He urged frequent water samples to the Edmonton government laboratory and proposed hiring a firm member to supervise filtration. Sewage plans proceed with engineer Morrison and the septic tank deferred for this year. Hooper & Huckvale shipped eleven cars of fat beef to Hochelage per day from Dunmore Junction.

Brakesman N. Terry of this city lost an arm last Friday when a coupling between cars closed on his arm while he leaned across to let out air. The injury required amputation above the elbow at Maple Creek hospital.

A small blaze nearly destroyed the new Finlay bridge after a dropped match ignited dust above a pier. Buffeted by a quick response from Sol Smith, a few buckets of water extinguished the fire before major damage occurred.

Electric Star Theatre Opens With Full Houses

The Star Theatre opened Friday July 10 to a large audience and has drawn big crowds each night since. The up to date venue seats two hundred, is beautifully decorated and fully fireproof. Week of July 13 features a mix of titles including English Derby 1908 Shineing the Mail Carrier and The Terrible Molar. Additional showings include A Sack of Coal The Deserter and other titles with varied runs.

Cypress Club Opens New Clubhouse in Western Canada

The Cypress Club opened its new clubhouse on 4th Ave with an informal card evening attended by about thirty members and ladies. Leonard’s orchestra provided music, and refreshments were served at midnight. The red brick building with oak interior is praised as the finest club in Western Canada, reflecting credit on architect Mr Williams and contractors Oakes and Everard.

Inquest On Victims Of Railway Wreck At Medicine Hat

A Thursday railway crash in Medicine Hat left several dead and many injured. The inquest heard details of the wreck, reported deaths of James Nicholson engineer and Howard Gray fireman, with service notes on Conductor Millett and others. Funeral services for Nicholson and Gray were held with railway organizations in attendance.
