Royals bound for Canada on 25 day tour
The Duke and Duchess of York depart London for a 25 day visit to Canada with a 13 day private holiday in the Northwest Territories. Police dogs and armed officers accompany them from Heathrow in a Canadian military aircraft. They will attend engagements in Ontario Manitoba Alberta and the Northwest Territories and receive an official welcome at Queen's Park Toronto at 3 15 p m. on arrival. They will mark their first wedding anniversary July 23 by watching the annual rodeo in Medicine Hat.

Firestone to close Hamilton plant idling 1300 jobs
Firestone Canada Inc. will shut its aging Hamilton tire plant ending operations Jan 31 1988 with 1300 employees receiving 18 weeks notice. The warehouse and distribution center will also close later as negotiations to find a buyer continue. Premier Peterson and Industry Minister O Neil had hoped for a rescue.

Flood Devastates Grand Bornand Campground Killing Dozens
ANNECY France AP reports violent rainstorms sent water and mud down a mountain into a campground near Grand Bornand killing at least 50 people feared dead. Rescue workers combed the debris as tents trailers and campers were ripped apart. By midday the toll stood at 22 with many missing.

A severe thunderstorm flooded roads and homes in Montreal leaving one man dead. 130,000 residents lost power as Hydro-Québec scaled outages affecting 300,000 homes. Ceremonial daggers returned to Sikhs after protest
Immigration officials returned 21 kirpan daggers to Sikhs detained after 174 East Indians entered Canada. The group, mostly men, had been under guard at a Halifax military base as an immigration investigation continued. Some members reportedly fasted as a protest, later resuming eating.

Poindexter Says Reagan Kept In Dark On Iran Contra Plan
Former national security adviser John Poindexter testified that he approved Oliver North s plan to divert Iran Iran arms sales profits to the Contras but kept the project secret from President Reagan to protect him from political damage. Poindexter said he believed Reagan would have approved if told, and tied the idea to Iranian arms dealer Manucher Ghorbanifar following a February 1985 London meeting. He claimed the scheme aligned with U S policy and that only he and North knew of it at launch. S remarks followed North s earlier testimony and prompted Sen Sam Nunn to say there would be no smoking gun.
