New Apple Hybrid Emerges At Brooks Gardens
An unnamed new fruit tree in the Alberta Provincial Government gardens at Brooks is a natural hybrid of the Hopa crab apple and yellow Siberian crab. The Hopa, a cross of Malus Niedwetzkyana and Malus bassata, was developed by Dr. N F Hansen and brought to Brooks via Canadian Pacific Railway experiments. The new seedling with dark red wood and russet leaves endured extreme prairie weather and blooms with rose blossoms beside white Siberian crab. Seeds from 1927 fruit were planted in new plots.
