A 17-year-old Medicine Hat youth sentenced to six months in jail for beating a 55-year-old woman at a Flats bus stop on May 7. Judge W N Gilbert called the attack cowardly and noted the victim suffered skull lacerations and cracked ribs after the assailant resisted police. The youth pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm mischief and assaulting a police officer.
In Brooks a four year old Olivia Griffin was abducted from her yard but released unharmed after a nightlong search by residents, RCMP, and volunteers. A heavy set man driving a white 1987 or 1988 Honda Prelude is sought, with motives unknown and no clear suspect.
The Swan Hills hazardous waste treatment plant will cost Alberta between 8.9 and 21.6 million to close, report says, as the province eyes taking over the privately run facility. Liberal critic Debby Carlson notes the dismantling bill adds to 441 million already spent, while Don Colley of Bovar Inc. argues the plant can remain viable and profitable.
Saskatoon report notes Colorado inventor Gay Balfour has created the Dog-Gone a modified street cleaner that sucks gophers from their underground dens at high speed and dumps them alive into a pen in the truck bed.
Tammy Cyr reports a man fitting the kidnapper's description approached her yard moments before four year old Olivia Griffin was abducted in Brooks. Cyr says her seven year old daughter saw a man at the gate and a white car passed by as police investigate the rare crime in the community.
A Calgary based Arthur Andersen survey of 57 Canadian oil and gas leaders finds they are cautiously optimistic about the industry's future despite lower spending and weak prices. They foresee WTI at 15.21 per barrel in 1998, with hiring likely to stay flat or fall but nearly half expect job gains by 2001.
Premier Ralph Klein criticizes the Kyoto Protocol and says Alberta will not ratify the accord without major changes. He argues Canada's six percent emissions reduction target by 2012 would devastate Alberta despite acknowledging greenhouse gases as an issue.
