The Canadian Commons approved bills removing federal sales tax on children’s clothing and footwear cosmetics confectionery and soft drinks and candy bars retroactive to Feb 19. A second bill reduces tariffs on a wide list of imported foods and manufactured goods.
Ottawa faces emergency immigration measures after two court rulings dissolve recent controls. Minister Andras to introduce remedial bill next week, with opposition scrutiny likely. Estimates warn 10,000 could rush for landed status. rulings allege conflict between regulations and the Immigration Act.
Viet Cong blamed Canadian officials for the second postponement of a rescue of two captive Canadian officers, Capt. Ian Patten and Capt. Fletcher Thomson, and two Vietnamese staff. The PRG said a new attempt will be made Sunday after a pickup area near Xuan Loc was attacked. Officials noted the Canadians face exhaustion from jungle marches and questioned their ability to move in hostile terrain.

With 56 000 workers across CP Rail CN and nine smaller firms, talks threaten a July strike as last contract expired December 31 1972.
Liberals from Western provinces and territories gathered in East Vancouver to discuss Western objectives and call for greater cooperation with eastern Canada. Prime Minister Trudeau and cabinet ministers listened as Western delegates urged reforms, noting Ottawa spends about 25 percent of expenditures in the West. They planned workshops on issues from foreign investment to grain marketing as delegates debated a strengthened Confederation.
