On July 12, 1812 General William Hull crossed from Detroit with 2500 soldiers aiming to liberate Canada. He failed to gain welcome support, retreated after three defeats at Duck River, and soon surrendered Detroit in August to General Isaac Brock. Pierre Berton, noted author and historian, was born. Chicago disc jockey Steve Dahl staged a disco demolition between games of a baseball doubleheader at Comiskey Park. Fans burned records and created a mini riot, leading to the White Sox forfeiting the game. The incident on June 27 involved a knife attack at a residence on 3rd St N.W. involving a 63 year old woman and a 76 year old man. Both victims were hospitalized with serious but stable conditions after being transported to Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
Redcliff RCMP seek help solving a crime from June 7 to June 8 in which an unknown person or people entered a resident's garage and stole over 5000 dollars worth of custom goalie equipment. The gear is unique and bears the word Grinch on every piece. Call Redcliff detachment or Crime Stoppers with information.
Brooks RCMP appeal for information after a July 7 incident in front of the Brooks library where a blue 2005 Dodge Spirit front grill was struck by a black truck. a separate July 10 hit and run involved a green Ford Explorer colliding with a blue GMC Sierra pickup and leaving the scene. Public urged to contact Brooks RCMP or Crime Stoppers with any details.
Regina has released hundreds of thousands of beneficial insects to fight aphids, reducing stress on elm trees and limiting damage to urban trees. City entomologist Russell Eirich notes aphids have caused noticeable harm to local trees.
Alberta government officials highlight Operation Clean Farm as a three year pilot that removed 184 000 kilograms of pesticides from farms. Farmers used free disposal at approved warehouses with contractors delivering to Swan Hills Treatment Centre. Final southern phase in 2004 collected over 76 200 kilograms, adding to 2003 central Alberta total of 88 400 kilograms and 2002 northern total of 19 605 kilograms.
Gov Gen Adrienne Clarkson cancelled former aboriginal leader David Ahenakew's Order of Canada membership on Monday after a Saskatoon court fined him 1000 for wilfully promoting hatred against Jews. The advisory council said he had brought disrepute to the order.
