Ottawa debates a possible shift in policy on liquor clearances to the United States as protests pour in from religious, temperance groups and lawmakers. Officials weigh risks of harboring lawbreakers and the impact on provinces if clearances are altered or refused.
Grant Hall first vice president of Canadian Pacific Railway inspected holdings of C M and S Company in Trail and the West Kootenay Power plant in South Slocan during a southern British Columbia transit to Calgary for the Stampede. He praised the Tadanac Smelters building program and was joined by D C Colszman and C A Cotterell among other CP officials.
Winnipeg reports nine local grain and elevator firms unite into Federal Grains Limited with assets near 9.25 million. James Stewart chairs the board, J C Gage as president, Harry Sellers as vice president, and A P Michael as general manager. The new group controls 320 country elevators and 7.25 million bushels of terminal space. Bond offering to follow with Wood Gundy and Royal Securities underwriting preferred stock. Head office to be in Winnipeg. Toronto officials say merger talks are near completion with an official announcement expected soon.
The X1, largest British submarine, reported an explosion during Mediterranean naval exercises near Malta. No deaths or injuries, vessel only slightly damaged and returning to Malta under its own power, escorted by the cruiser Ceres, expected early tomorrow.
Dr Gershaw reviews measures to prevent war and Canada’s plan to preserve world peace. He notes the giants United States Japan and the British Empire control seas and trade and warns that economic war is the primary threat. He argues Canada’s location makes it a key interpreter among nations and urges disarmament progress, though progress seems limited.
A severe cloudburst struck El Paso on July 11 with a flood from the Franklin mountains sweeping the exclusive district. Damage was estimated at a quarter of a million dollars as walls foundations and vehicles were washed away and adobe homes in the lowlands were destroyed.
Edmonton July 12 Late crop news from the Peace River country dampens hopes as dryness returns in the North Peace after scarce rains. An inch of rain fell Tuesday and Wednesday at Grande Prairie and Beaver Lodge aiding that area while Pouce Coupe reports adequate moisture. elsewhere moisture reserves are exhausted.
A. S. Mooney of Butte Montana Aircraft Inc and Neith Kindensticks visited the city, en route to Calgary and other western cities to promote sales of the company's planes. Aerial stunts were staged at the Municipal Golf links where the plane landed unaware of Medicine Hat's landing field.
Representations have been made to the Minimum Wage Board seeking a review of existing wage orders. Hearings will occur in Medicine Hat on September 30, Lethbridge October 1, Calgary October 2 to 4, and Edmonton October 8 to 10.
The Canadian Wheat Pool reports Western Canada wheat at 65 percent of normal due to drought across the three Prairie Provinces. Manitoba stands at 70 percent on July 11 with Saskatchewan 69 percent and Alberta 54 percent of normal. Oats and barley harvest progress also noted in Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Ottawa reports a $92,620,133 decline in the Dominion of Canada's net debt for the year ending June 30. The total debt stood at $2,244,142,450 at end of June 1928, down from $2,151,522,317 on June 30. First quarter of the current fiscal year shows ordinary revenue up $13,529,152 and ordinary expenditure up $591,266.
Twelve boy cadets from Chatham naval barracks died when a dummy house at a charity bazaar caught fire in Gillingham England. Three firemen and several rescuers were seriously injured as spectators watched the dramatic blaze unfold. A nearby Kent town cinema also burned two dead, operator and assistant, with several injured.
Melbourne July 12 Australians protest the abolition of preference as Sir Philip Snowden opposes the move. Premier Stanley Bruce cables Prime Minister Stanley MacDonald conveying the Australian stance and urging reconsideration.
The Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce plans to invite the Canadian Manufacturers' Association to include Medicine Hat in a western tour. No official word from the Association exists yet, but the secretary urges a stop to assess the local situation given the city's cheap fuel.
Reports from Harbin and Peking say 143 Russians tied to Moscow were deported from Manchuria in 12 hours. Foreign Minister Wang warned against Soviet propaganda as nationalist forces crack down. Panic hit Marichuri as railway seizures sparked protests and fears of broader clashes in Manchuria and along shared rail lines.
London July 11 Premier Ramsay MacDonald outlined plans for a debate on resuming relations with the Soviet government but said no postponement until after such a debate. He indicated publication of correspondence may come later while Dominion views remain unsettled. Labor left wing challenged unemployment fund contribution increases as the session tense.
