In Tangent Oregon the city council was evicted from a house inherited by a cat. Kitty Cat's owner died leaving a $100,000 estate to fund care for the cat. the council refused to cover $5,000 for a new furnace, prompting removal. The city hopes to relocate to an old community centre by September.
Manuel Noriega, the first ex-head of state captured for trial in the United States, was sentenced Friday to 40 years after a conviction on eight of 10 charges including drug trafficking and racketeering. He called Bush, condemned the justice system, and claimed retaliation for his Nicaragua stance.
Mortar rounds struck near the UN headquarters and the Canadian peacekeepers camp in Sarajevo during fierce fighting between Bosnian defenders and Serb irregulars. UN officials reported no injuries, but debris and a stray bullet caused minor damage.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney hailed the week’s constitutional pact as a substantial step toward an ultimate resolution of Canada’s 125 year old issues. He warned the deal is not engraved in stone and ordered officials to seek clarifications and draft a legal text with the provinces.

His wife Jacqueline, pregnant, waits at home as his unit treks through danger and a comrade loses a foot in a land mine accident. Somers plans a return home in about six weeks.
In Eckville Alberta former teacher Jim Keegstra was convicted of wilfully promoting hatred against Jews. He received a 3000 dollar fine marking a second anti hate conviction after a 1986 verdict was quashed on a technicality. Some locals supported him while others urged accountability.
A New York jury held Pan American Airways responsible for the Lockerbie Flight 103 attack killing 270, including two Canadians. The verdict enables survivors to seek damages potentially totaling 300 million or more. Pan Am plans an appeal as cases proceed in July.
Air Canada plans the elimination of 1,809 positions effective November 10 as part of cost cuts. The reductions affect flight attendants, agents, mechanics, cargo and ramp staff, bringing total employees to about 18,200. The airline cites ongoing losses and weak revenue per unit.
