Polyansky praised Canadian hospitality on Canada trip

Soviet deputy premier Dmitri Polyansky praised Canada during a 11 day tour from Quebec to the prairies. He thanked Canadians for warm reception in Gas City and Ottawa and said the trip was successful and informative. He visited Lethbridge and studied wind erosion prevention on farmland with agricultural researchers.

Weekend toll climbs to 71 in Canada losses over weekend

The Canadian Press tally shows at least 71 deaths across Canada from Friday evening to Sunday, with 53 traffic deaths, 16 drownings, and two train strike fatalities. Alberta reports three highway deaths, one drowning, one train death. Saskatchewan three traffic fatalities and one drowning. BC three road deaths. Manitoba one traffic death and one drowning.

Steel-helmeted highway troopers armed with billy clubs and guns drove away about 300 Negroes outside the Grenada county jail as sheriff deputies scattered 100 whites. Civil rights leaders planned later demonstrations including a swim-in and read-in to test public accommodations in the town between Jackson and Memphis.

Soldier-statesman McNaughton dies in Montebello

Gen. A. G. L. McNaughton a soldier scientist and statesman died at 4 a.m. EDT at his Montebello summer home aged 79. He led the Canadian Army in wartime, chaired the International Joint Commission, and later served as ambassador to the United Nations. His career spanned prewar research, wartime command, postwar public service and embassy duties.
