Calgary begins Stampede week as Alberta's second city becomes West capital. The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede fills the streets with bunting, chuckwagons, and parades featuring cowboys, Indians, RCMP, and bands. Last year drew 482 281 paid attendees.

In Washington a Vancouver couple Harry Staniforth 50 and Anne Staniforth 48 were killed when a one ton rock fell from a cliff onto their car on the Leavenworth Stevens Pass highway. The vehicle was driven 104 feet after impact.

Nine lives lost in Western Canada over the weekend, with six traffic deaths in British Columbia, two in Alberta, one in Manitoba. The tally includes a 19 year old mother and infant killed near Vancouver, a five year old boy and relatives in a Fraser Canyon crash, and multiple other fatalities from Alberta to Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Kessie Harold Allbee of Fort Saskatchewan was killed Sunday after contact with a high voltage wire while repairing at the Calgary Power substation near here. An inquest will be held.
Two pioneer Edmonton and Fort Macleod stagecoaches with armed drivers and a red shirt posse carried official mail into Calgary to a jubilee salute. The Edmonton coach, last run in 1892 and built in 1856, and the Fort Macleod coach from the 1870s, arrived after a two week 249 mile journey by four horses.
