Early morning fire at Redcliff destroys Mrs Josephine Bergeron's ice cream parlor and living quarters. Loss estimated over 1000 dollars. Fire drew crowds as flames consumed interior and stock. Nil details on cause. partly covered by insurance.
Ottawa observers peg September 23 as the likely general election date. Prime Minister Bennett has indicated elections will occur once preliminaries are finished, with nominations set a week before voting and celebrations anticipated to begin in August.
Prime Minister Joseph Lyons of Australia departs Washington after meetings with President Roosevelt and key officials. He expressed optimism for expanding Australian trade with the United States and said Ottawa trade agreements would not block such gains. Lyons noted no concrete proposals but expected further talks with US officials. He also cited good trade relations with Japan and declined comment on Pacific political matters.
Ottawa July 10 Hon R J Manion minister of railways and canals told Canadian Pulp and Paper Association members to unite with authorities to counter communism and defend British institutions. He argued railway profit depends on world trade, not management changes, and urged schemes for work and fair wages.

Alberta Social Credit League plans a nominating convention July 26 at Lac La Biche to choose a candidate for Athabasca and run in every Dominion constituency. Charles Gould, Edmonton Social Credit manager, announced the move and indicated cross province naming may occur in Saskatchewan and British Columbia.
