Ottawa Canada and 13 Commonwealth Caribbean countries reach a new trading arrangement at a top level conference. The compact blends immediate access measures with binding promises to boost commerce across the region.
A transient was killed when 46 cars of a 104 car CPR freight derailed near Brocket Alberta about 95 miles south of Calgary. Five crewmen were unharmed. The derailed cars blocked traffic on emergency trackage. Cause unknown. The dead man’s name was not released. The incident occurred at 12 01 AM MST. All other units and a caboose remained on track. The freight carried mixed commodities and grain.
In New York, the International Association of Machinists and five major airlines restart talks urged by President Johnson to end a walkout threatening 231 cities. Johnson backs round-the-clock sessions as 35 000 workers seek an agreement, with unions and airlines still far apart.
The CBC Seven Days controversy will be the focus of a 30 to 60 minute CTV program this Sunday night. Douglas Leiterman Patrick Watson and Reeves Haggan will join Douglas Fisher as moderator. CTV notes CBC declined to participate. Leiterman was dismissed as CBC This Hour Has Seven Days executive producer. Watson resigned as executive producer of Document and Haggan resigned as CBC public affairs general supervisor.
Police ready to curb teen outbreaks after last year's pre Stampede disturbances. Calgary hosts a six day Stampede starting Monday with open air teen dances and police dogs on standby. Governor Kennedy to ride in parade. festivities include oil show, barbecues, and football games with anticipated crowd of up to 600,000.
Dmitry Polyansky toured southern Alberta visiting Fort MacLeod and Lethbridge, attending a rodeo with around 2000 locals, watching bull dogging and calf roping. He and his party started the trip with an outdoor breakfast in Medicine Hat and observed farming methods near Taber, including a 20000 ton potato storage bin and sprinkler irrigation.
Ottawa external affairs minister Martin said talks toward a Geneva conference depend on two preliminary undertakings: an end to U.S. bombing of North Vietnam and North Vietnam's respect for the demarcation line with the south. He cited Hanoi's view that no political solution is possible while bombing continues. Martin noted China's July 3 statement and warned U.S. position on insurgent support is only partially accepted by Beijing.
In Kings Ist Prince Edward Island the deferred election hinges on fewer than 2,500 voters. The Kings 1st advance poll showed 141 ballots in 12 hours, over five percent of the 2,411 eligible voters. Conservative Keith MacKenzie and Liberal Daniel J. MacDonald lead the race for power balance.
Senator Robert F. Kennedy criticized Canada for neutrality in global crises while praising its support in Vietnam. He urged Canada to lead in Latin America and East Africa, help demonstrate free institutions, and urged UN action to end the Vietnam War. Kennedy and family were guests of publisher Max Bell during a Alberta vacation and to open the Calgary Stampede.
In St. Louis a traffic jam prompted police officer Don Miller to drop from a hovering radio station helicopter and instruct his pilot to land on the freeway. He then stepped out to direct traffic around a stalled car, easing the congestion.
U S forces battled Viet Cong units in a clash near the Cambodian border as 2,000 plus rebels attacked an armored column of the 1st Infantry Division. Air strikes and artillery followed, with ongoing fighting and no casualty report yet. Concurrent bombings hit oil storage areas and bases near Hanoi Haiphong and Thanh Hoa.
Lansing Chief Charles Stragier ordered the police motorcycle division to fix any noisy mufflers on department cycles after residents complained about noise. The move shows swift action to address public concerns and curb disturbing motorcycle noise in Lansing, Michigan.
