Unemployment rate falls slightly as June figures released

Statistics Canada reported 1,452,000 unemployed in June, 41,000 fewer than May, with the jobless rate dipping to 12.2 percent. The agency credited more part time work and gains in full time jobs over the prior three months, noting modest provincial improvements and continued youth joblessness.

Doctor cites medical judgment in morphine fatality case

A physician told a medical official he acted in accordance with his medical judgment when ordering an overdose of morphine for a dying newborn. The case centers on the physician’s actions as a medical decision and the ensuing scrutiny.

Morgentaler and associates ordered to stand trial in abortion clinic case

Dr Henry Morgentaler and two associates were committed for trial on conspiracy to procure a miscarriage charges related to his Toronto abortion clinic. Judge David Scott released them on 3000 bail and set a September trial date. Smoling must surrender passport and stay in Ontario. Morgentaler and Scott receive no extra conditions. Crown seeks bail review next Thursday.

Social Credit budget slashes BC public service

In Victoria the Social Credit government cut programs and jobs across the public sector after Finance Minister Hugh Curtis unveiled a tight budget. Legislation was tabled to allow dismissal without cause for all provincial employees, with about 250,000 affected after contracts end. Civil service jobs drop by 6,800 in 1983-84, wage cuts up to five percent for survivors, and a 7 percent sales tax with new hospital fees and rent controls scrapped.

Lightning Sparks Midnight Power Outage In Medicine Hat

A severe storm caused a citywide power outage around 11:25 p.m. with 90 minutes outage in northern Brier Industrial Park. Lightning struck a main substation. a relay failed at the power plant, one generator shut down, later repaired. No major damage reported beyond scattered showers and brief rain.

Mulroney to Run in Central Nova Byelection

Brian Mulroney, new Progressive Conservative leader, will contest the Central Nova by election Aug 29 in Nova Scotia. The riding was vacated by Elmer MacKay to allow Mulroney to enter Parliament. The other byelection is Mission Port Moody in British Columbia for Dave Barrett’s NDP replacement.
