The Medicine Hat Optimist Club hosts a soap box derby on July 18 at 9 30 a m featuring 21 local and district youths building their own racers. Heats run three to a finish in front of Safeway with Sgt Bill McKenzie and Louie Diebert as race chairs.
Georges Marcotte known as the Santa Claus bandit received another reprieve after three previous schedules for execution. His lawyer claims framing and was set to present a brief to Ottawa authorities as a court review proceeds. The 34 year old carpenter faced a September 25 date for hanging in Bordeaux Jail Montreal.
Premier-designate Moise Tshombe says he has formed a new Congo government with 12 men who have never held cabinet posts. It is unclear if President Kasavubu will approve. Tshombe, former Katanga president, would hold four key posts in the proposed cabinet.
The Canadian House of Commons approved a 10 a month student bonus aimed at preventing dropouts and announced a tax deduction for dependents. The measure affects about 500,000 youths with a 61.5 million annual cost and excludes Quebec. A separate step moved toward uniting the armed forces under a single defence chief, with retroactive rules to August 1965.
Canada’s Lester Pearson told the Commonwealth prime ministers’ conference that independence alone does not simplify a country’s problems. He cited Canada’s century-long path to sovereignty and that some issues remain unresolved despite full powers.
Ottawa reports a possible transcontinental railway strike was averted as the government pledges a temporary subsidy to railways to help cover a 19.1 cent hourly pay rise for 100000 non operating workers and a 57 million dollar wage settlement, with talks to resume July 16 in Montreal. The subsidy may be reviewed in six months and lasts until new railway legislation takes effect.
City council ended the last barrier to piped TV in Medicine Hat and Redcliff by approving a closed session agreement with Alberta Government Telephones AGT. AGT will control pole space with CableVision Medicine Hat Ltd as tenant and AGT will install equipment. AGT will receive 2.30 per pole annually for about 2600 poles, up from 1.25. CableVision manager W H Yuill expects signing in days and service to begin by October with homes connected in the two cities.
Former Medicine Hat resident Mrs. Willard C. Yuill died in Vancouver after a lengthy illness. Born Anne Ostland in Lethbridge, she moved to Medicine Hat in the early 1930s and to Vancouver in 1955. Survived by husband, mother Mrs. Ostland of Phoenix, brothers Don of Phoenix and Raymond of Vancouver, sister Mary of Phoenix. predeceased by sister Dodie.
The United States has supplied Greece and Turkey with Canadian made F 104 jet fighters during the Cyprus crisis while Canada refuses to ship F 104s to the two NATO rivals and ends RCAF maintenance in Athens. Canada to date shares in the cost but restricts use to strengthening NATO deterrence. Production runs through October 1965 with Canada and the United States unsure which countries will receive planes under the joint program.
City Council in closed session authorized the Police Commission to call tenders for constructing Medicine Hat's new police station. Work begins September 1 with provincial government approval required. The building will include a courtroom and aims to use winter works program where possible.
United States and Soviet Union signal readiness for high level talks on future UN military forces. A Tokyo note proposes a UN army under Security Council control funded by the five permanent members but not staffed by them, sparking debate in Canada and among others over veto rights and participation.
The Nation Appointment follows Roland Michener succeeding Chester Ronning as Canada's ambassador to India. Ronning, a towering figure in external affairs, retires at 69 after a long career bridging Western and Communist China. Ronning, born in China and schooled in Alberta, has been a key mediator since World War II.
