A Canadian Press survey reports 35 of 62 accidental deaths over the weekend were traffic fatalities from 6 p m Friday to midnight Sunday. Drownings claimed 19 lives and eight others died in different accidents.
Europe sweltered under a blistering heat wave with Italy hitting 105 in Novara and Zurich at 98. Death tolls rose in several countries including 11 in Switzerland and 18 heat deaths in Italy. Britain and Scandinavia saw relief as Denmark cooled with rain and Stockholm experienced drizzle.
Rube Gardner, chairman of the Exhibits and Concessions committee for the coming stampede, coordinates 37 inside exhibit booths in the drill hall and 12 outside displays along with seven concession spaces. He handles all rental funds and designs the drill hall layout, noting space shortages as a major ongoing challenge. Gardner, manager of Gardner Motors, reports persistent demand from service and church groups and says additional space is needed, possibly another building, to accommodate all exhibitors.
The warm air moving northward into the Western Prairies will keep overnight temperatures in the 50s. It will push highs into the 80s Tuesday in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan while northwestern Alberta stays cooler as Pacific air arrives. Cloud and scattered evening thunderstorms are expected in western and northern Alberta tonight and central to northern Saskatchewan Tuesday night.
British historian Professor Charles MacInnes told Vancouver audiences that England no longer holds the Commonwealth’s central role. Canada is rising as a world power though needing more people. He, totally blind, teaches Commonwealth history at UBC and was born in Calgary.
BC civil servants threaten a provincewide strike over salary increases and bargaining rights. If terms are not met by 72 hours after Sunday night, some 11,000 workers would walk off, halting liquor stores, essential services, courts, and pension payments while state payrolls and services could grind to a halt. The BC Government Employees Association seeks a permanent bargaining process and an impartial board to settle future grievances. Premier Bennett cautions on negotiations.
Vancouver CP officials warn of an imminent strike by Canadian Pacific Railway workers in British Columbia over seniority and new work rules. John Graham of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen cites Revelstoke disputes as triggering stricter company measures.
Vancouver reports the British Columbia Fisheries Association says United Fishermen and Allied Workers Union Ind has accepted new salmon prices for the 1957 season. The west coast strike continues pending shoreworkers dispute settlement. Union leaders had urged rejecting higher prices, but members voted to accept.
Damage unofficially estimated at $70000 from a fire Saturday night in the clothing and dry goods department of Ingrams Store in Brooks. Half the store was gutted by flames starting in the basement. smoke and water damaged the rest. RCMP patrolman raised the alarm just after 10 30 p m. Three and one half hours later the blaze was out. Firemen suffered minor injuries from glass and a severely cut thumb when a plate glass window burst. Two other firemen were overcome by smoke but recovered. A young man was arrested for stealing clothes from the burning building. Alberta civil defence pumped in an extra hose line and Sheffield sent a fire engine to assist. This was the town’s first major fire in over 15 years.
An RAF Venom jet fighter crashed into a military family apartment block after takeoff from Ton Gan base, killing five people including the pilot and injuring eleven. A fire engine en route to the scene collided, killing one firefighter and injuring seven, with two passersby hurt. The jet exploded on impact, burning the block as a one year old child and two women were among the dead.
Twenty four leading scientists from eleven nations gather in Pugwash Nova Scotia to discuss preventing humanity's destruction by atomic weapons. The private talks include Topchiev Szilard Yukawa Rotblat and others from Australia Austria Canada France Red China India and Poland as host Cyrus Eaton organizes further sessions.
The Rotary Club hears rancher Henry Cavan recount the tale of Alkali Pete a famed local character who sold calves from five cows. Pete moved 20 miles up the South Saskatchewan area ranchers rustled cows and faced a magistrate. The judge urges truth while Pete insists on not guilty pleading.
A three car collision on U S Highway 91 four miles north of Helena Montana killed Elsie Beach 23 of Hanna Alberta a honeymooning bride. Her husband Gerald 32 and brothers Earl 46 and Gordon Thomas 38 were injured and taken to hospital. Police said the Thomas car collided with Fields car before hitting the Beach vehicle.
Ben Carlin and Boyde De Monte arrived safely at Shemya Island six days overdue from Japan aboard the amphibious jeep Half Safe. The Australian 45-year-old Carlin began a world trip in the vehicle seven years ago, with De Monte, 28, from Phoenix joining in Japan for the 1,306 mile Pacific crossing as Northwest Airlines reported.

In a Lenin grad speech, I N Turko accuses Georgi Malenkov of trying to force him to sign a forgery in 1949 as part of the Len ingrad case. Turko says Malenkov threatened and smeared him while Beria and Abakumov were later executed for framing the case. Shvernik and Khrushchev also press Malenkov over past purges linked to Stalin era.

Ingrid Bergman tears up at a Paris reunion with her daughter Jenny Ann Lindstrom aboard a first class compartment on a flight from Stockholm. Jenny, 19, arrived at Le Bourget and was met by her mother after the other passengers had left. the two embraced after 12 minutes, with smudged makeup and reddened eyes showing they had been crying.
