On a 720 mile front the Bolsheviks launched a major assault against Polish lines. The Poles retreat on the northern and southern flanks as enemy forces press the center, forcing a withdrawal to shorten the front.
Directors named H S Joslin T J Mills and Mrs J F Terry as judges for outdoor horticultural events with entries closing July 30th and judging from August 1 to August 3. A committee led by President Cook and Ste Currie planned the August 20 21 exhibition and will secure a suitable hall. The secretary will contact Mr Reader of Calgary to judge again this year and entry forms are available from Ste Currie.
Spa Belgium July 6 The German defence minister urged a 200000 strong armed force to maintain order in the republic insisting it could be army or police under central government control. He described bands pillaging with machine guns and said a sizeable force was needed to counter the centrally organized groups.
Berlin July 7 foreigners face steep price hikes as the mark strengthens, with hotels charging 100 to 200 percent more than locals and shops, including Berlin haberdasheries, billing foreigners 60 cents for a white collar. Newspapers note growing American tourist influx to England and France could push foreigners away.
A Toronto Globe dispatch reports Durham Liberals who backed N. W. Rowell in 1917 urged him to insist his resignation be accepted. Rowell declined to comment and planned to return to Ottawa soon. A separate London fire department extinguished a locker room blaze at Globe Casket Co.
At a Board of Trade gathering in Blue Grass the urgency of medicine heated irrigation projects was stressed with a plan to send two delegates to the Lethbridge irrigation convention from July 28. A committee drafted a resolution, while survey work on the Ross Creek project was urged. Action on Porter's Toll road was discussed and a rural trail petition to restore closed routes, especially the Elkwater trail, was prepared for Hon. Mr. McLean and Mayor Brown of Toronto.
In Police Court this morning O Lyons and J OH Lewis were fined $2 and costs each for allowing cattle to run at large. J P Mitchell was fined for a horse at large. H McKinge and C H Cooper faced fines for using water in prohibited hours and unpaid lawn rates. Samuel Diamond had liquor charges withdrawn. Conrad Traas had the rest of his charges withdrawn.
The Vindal government issues rules requiring fur traders to pay royalties on pelts and skins of fur bearing animals. Fees range from fifty cents per bear to ten dollars for silver fox, based on a percentage of commercial value. A 25 fee applies for permits to buy furs wholesale or at public auctions.
News dispatch from Copenhagen reports Denmark will celebrate Reunion Day this Friday as North Schleswig is incorporated into the kingdom. The announcement notes nationwide festivities as the union is formalized under the Danish crown.
The German delegation recalls a disarmament proposal to Konstantin Pehrenbach for presentation to Allied representatives this afternoon as the conference continues.

George Calder completed his supplementary work.
Franklin D. Roosevelt of New York was nominated for vice president by the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, joining Governor James M. Cox. The nomination came by acclamation with a bandwagon backing and minimal ballot action.
The Winnipeg Evening Free Press states unofficial talks at the parliament buildings show Sir James Atkins will not dissolve the house again unless forced by defeat or resignation. Cabinet members indicate the government will continue administering provincial affairs until the next session to gauge real party strength.
FE Imionten reports that seventy five provincial schools cannot operate due to teacher shortages and conditions. Some districts are split by rivers without bridges, others lack boarding facilities, and in many cases it is impracticable to send a teacher.
Revina July 7 report states Charles Jones, an ex Barnardo Home boy, sued his employer Izre Shaw of Davin for sixteen years wages and wins a recently awarded $3,000.
About 550 farmers met at the Blue Grass school house to demand completion of the Hanna Medicine Hat line of the CNAR before winter. President Charles Augustin opened the meeting thanking locals and Medicine Hat attendees. A. J. Terrill named secretary, Cousins chaired. discussion centered on bridge difficulties and leveraging government pressure for a temporary bridge if needed.
Ottawa reports Sir Robert Borden will resign as prime minister this Saturday. Arthur Meighen to form a new administration as Rowell and Burrell retire from cabinet. White rejects leadership, health cited as reason for withdrawal from finance post.
