Medicine Hat prepares for the Eighteenth Annual Exhibition and Stampede with calls for decor and participation. Parade secretary Bob Reidy notes 14 float entries and optimism for one of the best parades yet while Larry Long urges early entries and antique car inclusion meeting vintage condition rules.
Four chuck wagons crashed during the Calgary Stampede sixth heat, led by Tom Dorchester driving the Ken Tanner Edmonton team. No horses injured. Other wagons damaged included Dave Scathheard Calgary, Hank Markas Lethbridge, and Last Frontier Guest Ranch Water Valley. Phil Gooch's Peter Bawden Calgary outfit led the standings as 99,307 attended the first day. The six-day spectacle opened with Prime Minister Pearson and featured a mud cow milking event.
The Medicine Hat 4-H Dairy Club won top prize, earning $100, for a display highlighting 4H achievements and benefits. Balzac Beef Club from Alta took second, with an exhibit showing various cuts of beef.
The CPRs Canadian passenger train derailed near Chalk River with about 175 aboard. Fourteen were treated in hospital, incl a 72 year old Winnipeg man detained. The derailment damaged 300 feet of track as work crews cleared the line toward Pem broke North Bay.
The amended watering bylaw allowing daily use for meters passed on a six to two vote led by Mayor Harry Weiner. Opponents Aldermen Earl Smith and Peter Simpson argued against daily watering privileges benefiting large frontages. The bylaw imposes up to 100 fine and meters required. new meters expected for up to 500 applicants.
The Pacific coast quake in Guerrero killed 31 people, with Acapulco spared major damage though some reports cite higher death tolls. In Mexico City buildings were damaged and two heart-attack deaths were linked to the shocks.
In New Castle Pennsylvania five employees remain missing after a sequence of four explosions and fires at American Cyanamid’s 535 acre site west of the city. The blasts occurred within an hour and cause is undetermined with no damage estimate yet reported. In France, an avalanche on Aiguille Verte claimed 14 climbers including Charles Bozon, a 1962 world slalom ski champion.
The Canadian House of Commons debated the plan for a single defence chief as part of six measures. Conservatives pressed Defence Minister Hellyer for more information on integration and savings, questioning how to implement a unified force and disputing stated manpower impacts and cost cuts.
Ottawa reports a 19.1 cent hourly wage increase for non operating railway workers based on the conciliation board. CNR and CPR leaders pledge a two year deal with Frank Hall, as government promises a six month review of costs and possible temporary aid.
Magistrate A Y Spivack dismissed the contributing to juvenile delinquency charge against Clinton Mark Felesky of Medicine Hat after Crown Chief A R Bull failed to prove the plaintiff girl’s age. Defence lawyer James Pritchard urged dismissal as proof of the daughter’s identity was lacking. Trials for five other Medicine Hat youths charged with the same offence are set to follow.
Canadian Trucking Associations leader says subsidies to railways must be temporary as new railway legislation is delayed until September. He notes fear of continued subsidies for wage hikes and cites past aid totaling about 50 million dollars annually, with possible railway support reaching 100 million or more at the outset before tapering off.
Ottawa reports the Liberal party in Quebec approved a split between provincial and federal organizations by a wide vote, reshaping loyalties. Premier Lesage and ministers Levesque and Lajoie dominate Quebec politics while favreau quests to build a federal unit under pressure from provincial interests.
