Mines Minister Prudham cites gains in coal industry but rejects an opposition bid for a national fuel policy. Opposition seeks higher veterans allowance income ceiling. Veterans Minister Lapointe says plans for a new cenotaph are underway. Monday the Commons debates a government supply motion as the Senate adjourns until Tuesday.
Two men were held in police custody as detectives pursued the kidnapping of five week old Peter Weinberger from his carriage in Westbury New York. A spokesman said the men had no direct connection with the crime and details remained guarded. A call to the parents was traced and another man was suspected of loitering near the Weinberger home. No ransom money had been exchanged.
Alberta Government Telephone officials announce over 5,000 new Medicine Hat and district directories will be delivered in weeks. The 1956 books introduce a two letters five digit dialing system with JA as the code for Medicine Hat and FA for Lethbridge, changing numbers from four digits to JA plus five digits.
Medicine Hat confirms seven banks will operate locally. The Imperial Bank of Canada calls tenders for a new office at Third Street and Fifth Avenue, with tenders closing July 23. The 1956 federal census shows Medicine Hat city up by about 4 000 residents to 20 739, boosting provincial grants and prompting talk of a civic census. The city had 20 122 in the civic count, with subsidy of 157 048 dollars based on 7.80 per capita. The federal total for the constituency is expected near 54 000, vs 47 065 in 1951 and 41 683 in 1941.

In the first half of 1955 there were 17 injuries: 10 passengers, five pedestrians and two drivers.
The report shows 97 daytime accidents versus 46 at night this year, compared with 104 daylight and 33 nighttime last year. February had 42 crashes, January 28, and May was the safest month with 17 incidents.

A 10 month old mountain lion escaped from an open cage at the San Antonio Zoo and wandered through crowds before leaping into a duck pond. Zookeeper Fred Stark said the frightened animal, kept as a pet, had never been outside the cage. Spectators crowded for a closer look, worsening the animal’s panic. It had to be netted from the pond.
More than 1,200 people attended the annual field day at the Manyherries experimental range yesterday under Superintendent Hobart Peters and staff. Lectures on grass and grazing featured John Cross and others, with cross-bred cattle displays, cutting horse competitions, and a barbecue. Winners in the cutting horse event led by George Ross Jr. included Kevri Stave of Nanton, Cliff Ross of Edmonton, and Royal Burrows of See-1,200.
