In Rock Glen Saskatchewan a local dispute over a small milk fee led town’s children to reject an agreement on drinking milk. A free-vimming sign sparked the protest and the dairyman threatened to halt milk deliveries until terms were met. Orton and others discuss federation leadership while ballots favor affiliation. In Winnipeg on July 7 the prosecution of Dr S W Fox, Social Credit leader, for performing an illegal operation on Miss Alice Boswell was dropped after Magistrate Thomas Little ruled that under common law a wife cannot be compelled to testify against her husband. Boswell, now Mrs Fox, testified she married Dr Fox in Elko Nevada on May 17 1937. The magistrate held the rule applicable and barred further questioning.
Hon J G Gardiner federal Minister of Agriculture passed through Medicine Hat on his way to Swift Current from Calgary this afternoon. He was met by a delegation led by Dr Gershaw. Gardiner planned to remain in Maple Creek a day or two to survey crop conditions before proceeding to Ottawa and then Medicine Hat to assess farm conditions and irrigation relief prospects.
Albertans in Vancouver are invited to a big annual Alberta Society picnic on Sunday July 18. A two hour CPR coaster steamer will transport attendees from Newcastle Island to Vancouver, with 9:30am departure and return by evening. Adults pay 1.35, children 0.50, and organizers urge sending transportation requests to the Alberta Society secretary.
Fires spread across eight square miles west of Edmonton near Mari and Grande Prairie trail, burning since June 30. More than 200 firefighters, paid 15 cents an hour, battle blazes under provincial regulations, pumping water and building back fires across otter sections and ditches. Son is 100 miles west of Edmonton.
In Warsaw the Senate and Chamber urged President Moscicki to convene a special parliament to resolve a clash between the government and Krakow's Archbishop over moving Marshal Pilsudski's body. Britain proposes a three state plan for Palestine with League of Nations approval. The government issues a white paper warning Jewish and Arab factions to end strife and follow a new arrangement under a three state framework.
Dublin July 7 The final Irish Free State election tally shows Fianna Fail with 69 seats, Fine Gael 48, Independents 72 and Independent Labour 13 in a 138 total. De Valera’s party remains in minority with Speaker voting, suggesting possible balance of power and a potential new election to seek full majority. The constitution referendum also shows 599,635 in favor and 452,692 against. The new Dail meets July 21.
The Governor General and Lady Tweedmuir paused in Winnipeg during a western and northwestern tour. His Excellency held a vestiture ceremony aboard his private car, honoring Dr. Ellen Douglas, a Winnipeg physician and World War I veteran, with the St. John of Jerusalem order. They were greeted by Manitoba Lieutenant-Governor Tupper and hosted at luncheon aboard the train before continuing to Alsask and on to Calgary for the stampede.
The seven state steel strike opened in Cleveland as about 3000 workers returned to three Republic Steel plants after 41 days of idleness. National Guard forces kept order with bayonets and machine guns. Cleveland mills had been closed since May 26 amid the strike. In Youngstown Manboning County a grand jury indicted more than 200 persons.
World champion all around cowboy Herman Linder was badly hurt when tossed by a wild steer during the opening day of the Calgary Stampede. He withdrew from all events after suffering knee injury.
The Montreal Star reports at a banquet in L Assomption Paul Gouin will be asked to return as leader of the Action Liberale Nationale Party, now merged with the Union Nationale. He may receive financial aid to restart major political activity as planners outline summer plans.
Sudden incident as test pilot J K Quill tested a new bomber. He spun from 10 000 feet and bailed out, landing in a friend's garden. The aircraft crashed onto the roof of an empty house nearby during the dinner gathering.
A homing pigeon named Lacy Churchill reportedly flew a distance of about 2,039 miles from Texas to Minnesota in 43 days. Local aviators say the feat could establish a world record for long distance pigeon flights, noting the trek crossed multiple states and presented extreme endurance challenges.

At 8 05 this morning a crash between two light delivery trucks at Seventh Street and Eighth Avenue left Jim Middleton of 813t Third Street with painful but not serious injuries. Middleton drove east on Seventh near Beaver Lumber when a Ford driven from the south struck his vehicle, overturning a truck and stopping against a tree.
Ottawa reports that the special reserve of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has started training at N Division Rockcliffe. About 300 men will undergo a course in civilian police work from July through August, following an $80,000 appropriation passed by Parliament.
