On a 720 mile front the Bolsheviks launched their largest attack against Polish lines. Poles retreat on the northern and southern flanks as forces press. To shorten their lines, Polish troops begin withdrawals at all points.
Directors appointed H. S. Joslin T. Mis and Mrs. J. Terry as judges for outdoor contests. Entries closed July 30 and will be judged August 1 to 9. A committee led by Pres. Cook Sec. Currie and H. W. Joslin will arrange a suitable show hall. Secretary to contact Mr. Reader of Calgary about judging again this year. Entry forms from Sec. Currie. early application advised amid expected large entries.
Spa Belgium July 6 German defence minister Gessler argued Germany must have an armed force of 200000 to quell civil unrest amid calls to disarm groups tied to Bolshevik influence. He warned 150000 police would fail to stop centralized bands using poison gas and looting.
As the German mark climbs foreigners find Germany the dearest country in Europe. Prices rise as the mark strengthens with several shops forcing foreigners to pay 100 to 200 percent more than natives. Some Berlin merchants charge foreigners 60 cents for an ordinary white collar. News of American tourism to Germany and France prompts questions whether extortionate charges will deter visitors.
A Toronto Globe dispatch reports prominent Durham Liberals who backed N W Rowell in 1917 seek his resignation as the Ottawa cabinet contemplates his withdrawal from the Union. Rowell says no statement is ready and plans to return to Ottawa. a London wire note mentions a fire at Globe Casket Co. locker room.
In London a crowd of plumage workers gathers for a Memorial Hall protest on June 9 against the Plumage Bill. They condemn the legislation as nussy-foot and seek to end the slaughter of birds for hat decorations.
The Board of Trade discussed irrigation and completion of the CNR line. Delegates were to be chosen for the Lethbridge irrigation convention July 28 to 30, with a committee drafting a resolution for presentation and a wire to the minister urging faster Ross Creek survey work. A visit to Porter's Hill road and requests to open closed rural trails were also approved.
In a police court session this morning O Lyons and J W Lewis were fined two dollars and costs each for allowing cattle to run at large. J P Mitchell paid four dollars and costs for letting a horse roam. Hy McWingos received one dollar and costs for water use in prohibited hours, plus unpaid lawn and garden rates. C Tf Cooper was fined one dollar and costs for water in prohibited hours and for using water without a hose nozzle. Charges against Samuel Dinemund for liquor in the province and non private dwelling were withdrawn. The first similar charges against Conrad Haas were withdrawn and the second dismissed.
Regulations issued in Victoria British Columbia set royalties for fur traders on pelts and skins. Royalties range from fifty cents for bears to ten dollars for silver fox, calculated as a percentage of commercial value. A four cent permit fee applies for wholesale purchases or public fur auctions.
King Christian of Denmark will sign the law incorporating North Schleswig into the kingdom on Monday. The act will be celebrated as Reunion Day in all parts of Denmark, dispatches from Copenhagen report.
Spa Belgium July 7 The Associated Press reports that German ministry officers at the legation urged presenting a disarmament plan to Allied representatives this afternoon The conference will continue as the idea is revived Konstantin Lehrenbach led the German delegation in backing the proposal.
This year marks the first tie in the history of Medicine Hag as the gold medal is awarded for the final years examinations of the Abherta Lio Society. The winner is Mr. de HH. Delf of Laddlaw, Blan chard & Co with top marks in one paper and an average of 51 per cent. Second place goes to Miss Winter of Clark, Clairkson, & McLeod Calgary and third to Roy Many zer of Blackstock & Clow. Several candidates pass, with some needing supplementary exams.
Franklin D Roosevelt of New York assistant secretary of the Navy won the Democratic nomination for vice president at the national convention joining Governor James M Cox of Ohio. The nomination came without a ballot amid a bandwagon push and withdrawals of several other contenders. Tim Ausberry placed Roosevelt in nomination as Cox delegates watched.
The Winnipeg Evening Free Press reports officials at the parliament buildings say Sir James Atkins will not grant another dissolution unless a government defeat or resignation makes it necessary. Cabinet members indicate the government will continue administering the province until the next session to test strength or weakness.
Due to lack of teachers and conditions in the provinces, 75 schools are not operating. Some districts are divided by rivers with no bridges, others lack proper boarding places, and sending a teacher is impracticable.
Regina Saskatchewan July 7 Charles Jones an ex Lamardoe Home worker who sued his employer for thirteen years wages was recently awarded full compensation. The case highlights long legal battles over unpaid wages in the farming region.
Ottawa July 7 The political climate shows signs of clearing as Sir Robert Borden may resign with Sir Thomas White to be asked to form a new administration. Sir Arthur Meighen is seen as likely successor if White cannot proceed. Mr Rowell is expected to decide, though he gave no new comment.
Toronto July 6 Sir Thomas White stated he could not accept government leadership even if offered. He arrived from Muskoka en route to Ottawa for talks as privy councillor and MP. He repeated he is not a candidate and his name is not available for consideration due to health and private affairs. He would support a new leader from the current cabinet.
Spa Belgium July 7 Important causes of the peace treaty with Turkey will remain as they are the supreme council decided in session with Premier Venizelos present Greece. A commission of experts will be appointed to study minor clauses for possible partial revision only.
The Medicine Hat U. F. A. holds its regular meeting Friday at 1 PM in City Hall. Important business will be discussed and a large attendance is requested. Judging in the gopher contest will take place at this meeting.
A violent explosion at the Gunpowder factory in Vongnes near Dijon leaves ten dead and thirty badly injured, alarm spreading through the area.
Ottawa reports civil servants will receive back pay covering 15 months within the next two weeks. About 4 million dollars is estimated to fund the intergration of civil service classifications.
