The cabinet of former prime minister John Diefenbaker averaged 53.4 years at the 1963 Conservative defeat. A few months before, during Louis St Laurent’s Liberal government near late 1956, the cabinet average age was 57.
Ottawa reports Eric Kierans joins Prime Minister Trudeau's cabinet as postmaster general and will head communications when the department is created. The 54 year old former Liberal minister from Montreal is noted for his Quiet Revolution leadership and bilingual effort.
Transport Minister Hellyer and Defence Minister Cadieux retain posts as 29-member cabinet expands from 25. Six in their 30s, three new to Parliament after June 25 election. New posts include communications, regional development, supply and services, with Jean Marchand, Don Jamieson overseeing key portfolios. Jean Luc Pepin moves to industry and trade, then industry.
A Los Angeles group Brandi Perry and the Bubble Machine was attacked on a South Vietnamese road. Two male members aged 17 and 19 were killed as they raised their hands to surrender. Singer Paula Levine, 20, and another member, Jack Bone, 18, were wounded. The group had been en route to Vung Tau to perform for American troops.
Arthur Ernest Emerson Keith, 47, wanted on a non capital murder charge for the shooting of Frank Buhler, was arrested at 1:25 a.m. in Alberta Beach after a three day search with dogs and aircraft. Buhler, 34, was shot in a cottage as Mrs. Mary Nickerson and four of her children slept. Keith was unarmed and held for questioning at Stony Plain RCMP.
Cairo says it would not object to the return of United Nations peacekeeping forces on its soil if the UN requests it. Quebec premier Daniel Johnson’s doctor says he suffered a mild heart attack. Britain’s railways move toward normal after a 12 day slowdown strike settlement. Japan’s defence treaty with the United States faces a polling test in the upper house election. U.S. Ag Secretary Freeman predicts a green revolution rice seed will turn South Vietnam from importer to exporter by 1971.
The Canadian strike wave grows with over 1,200 St Lawrence Seaway workers on strike, 24,000 postal workers threatening a national walkout, 800 traffic controllers warning of airport shutdowns, a three week beer strike in Ontario involving 3,000 workers, 2,980 Quebec liquor board staff awaiting a new contract, potential teacher and mill worker action, 1,300 Orenda engine plant employees off work, and 2,300 International Harvester workers on strike in Hamilton.
Four masked robbers entered a Lower Town branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Quebec City shortly after 4 p.m. They opened fire as customers and staff hid on the floor. One gang member, Yvon Germaine of Quebec City, 28, was killed, two others wounded, and two private security guards were injured during the cross-fire.
The ACLU says it is probing Saidallah Sirhan's claim that U S citizenship is held back after his brother, Sirhan Bishara Sirhan, was charged with Kennedy's murder. Sirhan, 36, was to be sworn in June 7 but was told to skip after the June 5 assassination. immigration officials said the case is under investigation.
Cape Town Dr Philip Blaiberg the world’s longest surviving heart transplant patient remains very ill with a lung ailment and recovering from hepatitis at Groote Schuur Hospital. Officials reported pulmonary complications and noted his liver condition is improving though the overall state is grave.
