Floods and storms across France and parts of Germany kill more than thirty people as the Havre Paris express wreck near Achres claims 18 dead and 97 injured. Normandy and Île de France suffer millions in damages, while Germany reports dozens dead and a disaster at a town near Berlin.
In Winnipeg on July 6 inspections logged 128 cars under contract grades 73 and coarse grains 126 cars.
William R. Shop of Pittsburg reports Mummie a lost Maltese cat reappeared at his door after eight months away in Florida. The cat, once missing at Hollywood Beach, walked in purring and rubbing his shins. The voyage may set a feline coming home record though the cat shows signs of rough travels with injured paws ears and fur.
Reginald Bray won a damages award of 180 dollars from the City of Medicine Hat after a January 10 sidewalk fall on Steel Street near Clay Street. Bray cited the sidewalk’s poor condition as the cause of his severe injuries and lost work. Judge Jackson announced the judgment in the district court.
Winnipeg reports a broad rise in grain prices led by wheat and flax as Liverpool demand pushes values. Wheat closed 6-8 to 7-8 higher with October at 1.3238, July 1.60, December 1.31, while oats show strong demand and flax sees about 1 1/2 cent gains amid light steady cash trade and limited offerings.
The weekly report notes favorable rains across the West improve crop conditions. Wheat is bolting in early fields while oats barley and fox thrive. Hay is light in yield and pastures stock are thriving. Sheep teams report strong shearing and a heavy wool clip. Quebec July 3 E W Beatty chairman and president of the Canadian Pacific Railway returns from five weeks in England aboard the Empress of France. He says Canada is among the wealthiest parts of the British Empire and comments on Britain's coal strike and general strike. He praises constitutional methods and public spirit in Britain and notes the strike’s swift, bloodless handling.
London reports escalate as agitators threaten actions to exploit the general strike. Government dismisses the threats as unions falter and Baldwin aims to enforce his appeal to employers. Miners' strike lengthens, reducing union funds as workers face short time and unemployment.
Avaklon California July 5 a forty five foot gasoline cruiser Una G on its maiden voyage exploded near Lover's Cove causing the probable deaths of two people and injuring twelve others all Californians. Mrs Roland Tyler of Pasadena and Dora Riggins two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs C H Riggins are missing. The blast split the vessel in two and sank the parts as nearby craft aided in rescue efforts. Cause of the accident is not yet known.
Ottawa July 5 A statement by E J Garland on behalf of the Progressive group explains they did not back Meighen’s June 29 effort to form a government without their consultation. The memo to Mr Forke was guidance not a contract, and the group would have aided a legally constituted ministry.
Police seized over two million dollars in fake Bank of Montreal notes found in a Hillhurst basement trunk at 142 Tenth Street. Reginald Garrett, 32, imprisoned in Victoria, and associate believed to be Barritt were linked to the operation after detectives Cheyne and McComble Gilbert uncovered printing dies and complete bill impressions.
Ottawa reports Premier Arthur Meighen will issue a statement on the legality of Parliament’s dissolution. Work on the general election begins with writs and voter lists, with lists likely needing about fifty three days, suggesting a September 21 vote and an early cabinet formation this week.
