The OECD warns Canada must bring inflation under control before a sustained recovery. It calls provincial wage restraint, criticizes labor flexibility, and notes protected industries inflating prices. High rates will persist even if the US improves, unless inflation is tackled.
OECD economists warn Canada faces slack activity over the next 18 months with only modest inflation progress despite unemployment rising. They stress high interest rates as essential for recovery while domestic inflation and U S developments condition any rate cuts. They suggest starting with civil servant pay settlements, especially in provinces.
Thousands attended at Lions Park and Athletic Park for Dominion Day events despite clouds and a late thundershower. Speeches by MLA Jim Horsman and Mayor Ted Grimm preceded hours of music, dance, and concessions while raft and canoe races on the South Saskatchewan River drew strong turnout. A noon thunderstorm drenched Lethbridge with 63.5 mm in an hour, flooding streets and underpasses as 25 minutes of heavy rain swamped the city. Simultaneously near Rocky Mountain House, a northeast tornado tore through farmland, destroying a log cabin and mobile home and injuring Peter Merritt who was treated for facial cuts.
City RCMP reported the death of Victoria Wong 98 Clark Cres SE and injury to her son Trevor after their eastbound vehicle left Highway 3 eight kilometres west of Medicine Hat. The car rolled in a ditch and her son was taken to Calgary Foothills Hospital. Driver identity is under investigation.
Across Canada protests touched Dominion Day events while many Canadians enjoyed the day off in sun. Ottawa faced a bomb scare and a carillon shutdown, 110000 sang O Canada, 970 citizens were sworn in as Canadians in Alberta, while Montreal saw pro and anti independence demonstrations and bonfires with a Trudeau caricature. Belle Plaine residents returned a government cheque and flags urging Trudeau's resignation and budget scrapping.
