On January 31 marks the execution anniversary of Guy Fawkes for the Gunpowder Plot. In Britain Catholics hoped for tolerance from James I. An anonymous letter halted the plot. The Durham Report urged uniting Upper and Lower Canada. Timothy Eaton founded Eaton’s died in Toronto at 72. Phil Manzanera is noted as guitarist.

Brooks RCMP report a theft of a single access utility trailer with yellow rims from a farm north of Brooks on Highway 873 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on January 20. Anyone with information is asked to contact Brooks RCMP Stoppers.
Brooks RCMP investigate break and enter at lot SW15 con 16 site 13 Tilley between December 15 and 27. A garage was broken into and a stamp set and a sledgehammer were stolen. Contact Brooks RCMP or Crime Stoppers with information.
Medicine Hat Police search for a man wearing a mask and armed with a knife who robbed the Liquor Kabinet at 4-180 Carry Drive S.E. around 3:35 p.m. He fled in a blue 1970s style pickup without a back bumper. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. witness calls urged to contact police.
Solicitor General Harvey Cenaiko announces a six month pilot plan with RCMP to place eight special constables on highways 63 and 21 near Edmonton and Fort McMurray. Officers will enforce transportation safety laws and handle drinking and driving offences, with potential duties at bars and casinos.
Elections Canada declared Gary Merasty the winner in Desnethe Missinippi Churchill River, defeating Conservative Jeremy Harrison by 73 votes after an initial 106 vote margin. Merasty is an aboriginal leader with a long First Nations government history, in Meadow Lake Sask.
