Prime Minister Benson announces five main changes to estate duties aiming to ease burden on farms and family businesses. Exemptions for small estates stay, five year payment window for large estates, and the old $50 000 threshold retained with options to use higher child exemptions until July 31. Gifts to minor-child trusts up to $2 000 yearly become tax free. Full plan to take effect by July 31 with no retroactive effect. The policy keeps widow exemptions and raises child exemptions, while bequests to distant relatives face higher taxes.
Iraqi Information Minister Abdullah Salloum al Samarrai warned that more Iraqis will go on trial for spying for Israel and more public hangings could follow after 14 were executed in secret trials. He defended the executions as necessary in a 20 year war with Israel and said demonstrations abroad reflect misinformation and Zionist influence. In Buffalo Narrows Sask a 19 year old Metis laborer Frederick Moses McCallum was arrested after seven people were killed with an axe in a two room house. Victims include Pederson family members plus a house guest. One child critically injured. McCallum faces seven non capital murder charges in Prince Albert magistrate's court. Autopsies to be held in Prince Albert. Buffalo Narrows a Metis community of about 1200 with local fishing and hunting economy.
Joseph Dobos of Calgary faces an attempted murder charge after stabbing his common law wife Eva Dobos, 30, in Southeast Calgary. She is in fair condition with wounds to the neck chest and thigh. In Seoul a rail collision killed 31 and injured 77. A National Airlines DC-8 with 63 aboard was hijacked off Louisiana and directed to Cuba, the eleventh such hijack this month.

U S forces report uncovering a vast North Vietnamese base about 53 miles northwest of Saigon in War Zone C, potentially the largest seen in the war. The site spans four square miles and could house 5,000 or more troops, with hundreds of bunkers, an underground hospital, dining halls, a bicycle shop, a command post, and multiple wards. Lt Col Frank Henry said 354 bunkers counted. estimates suggest 750 to 1,000 bunkers in the area. the hospital complex has five operating rooms and multiple wards.
The Finance Committee plans a bylaw to borrow $950 000 over 25 years for a new arena. Architect Jack Russell said building costs total $879 000 with a 5 percent fee, bringing the project to $929 000 including seating, kitchen and other facilities. Furnishings remain a concern, but the group expects costs not to exceed the borrowed amount.
