Palliative ward at Medicine Hat closes as beds shift

Alberta Health Services records show palliative care per day at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital at 805 dollars, below the 1200 to 1500 dollar range cited when the ward closed. The 12 bed unit ended operations at year end, with Carmel Hospice able to meet demand.

The closure is expected to save about $5.5 million annually, based on paying for one ward at near full occupancy. Covenant Health says per day hospice costs average $440, framing cost comparisons for the change.

Southview Grade 6 raise funds for injured Saskatchewan puppies

Southview Community School students in Grade 6 form the Southview Animal Crew to fund veterinary care for a litter of puppies found near the Saskatchewan border. The GoGetFunding campaign has surpassed 200, with posters and jar collections at school and plans for a February bake sale. The drive also aims to raise awareness about animal abuse.

Kenney sworn in as Opposition leader in Alberta
