London reports a British government blue book on Soviet labor decrees showing compulsory work in penal camps loading unloading grain and timber. It cites 1930 orders demanding large production increases and strict discipline with unemployed workers sent to work under penalties.
Ottawa reports a heroic rescue at Resolution Island Hudson Straits where Eskimo Tommy and Andre Lajoie, a Cornwall Ont. chef, survived after a drifting ice block left him in icy water. Tommy repeatedly risked drowning to pull Lajoie to safety using a rope and improvised aid. Medical guidance from Ottawa via radio aided treatment and Lajoie began recovery, stationed far from medical help.
Pierre Laval, a young French premier, presented to the Chamber of Deputies a plea to bury the Watchet and grant the government power to pursue peace and reconstruction. He urged a methodical push for world peace in collaboration with nations holding the same view, regardless of treaties.

In Berne on January 30 three English women and a Swiss guide were buried by an avalanche while trekking from Jungfrau Joch toward the Aletch glacier. Rescue workers found two women and two guides near Riederalp. the remaining bodies had not been recovered.
Associated Press reports renewed earthquakes in southern Mexico. Buildings collapsed including the tower of Tlaxiaco temple and a structure at Miahuatlan injuring a girl. Many houses fell in Iduatosco Vera Cruz prompting residents to abandon homes and set up tents outdoors.
Los Angeles attorney Yord confirms Aimee McPherson is aboard an unspecified steamship in the Pacific with Roberta Semple. Ford guards vessel name and destination as physician advised privacy for Mrs. McPherson. The report notes efforts to preserve privacy during travel.

Calgary Jan 30 arrangements have been completed between Ribstone Oils Limited and the Canadian Pacific Railway to supply 400 barrels of crude oil daily to main line locomotives operating through the mountains between Calgary and Vancouver. The oil will be transported from the Ribstone field to McLaughlin station by a 14 mile pipe line to be built by the company. Total expenditure for this and immediate McLaughlin development is put at 30 to 50 thousand dollars. Col J H Woods of Calgary is president of Ribstone Oils Ltd.
In Whitehaven Cumberland England an explosion buried twenty eight coal miners. Officials issued a casualty list at the hour with all others located and being brought out alive. Forty two remain in serious condition in hospitals. Some men caught near the edge of the blast turned back into gas filled passages and were rescued.
Japanese newspapers reported that Yangtse pirates pursued by a government patrol doused five Chinese captives with hot oil and nailed them to the mast before escaping after abandoning their boat. Chinese steamship lines are adding guards aboard coastal and Yangtse river vessels to counter such robberies.
A Bombay report cites Rab Indranath Tagore warning against a hasty acceptance of Ramsay MacDonald’s self government proposals. He argues any form of government cannot immediately solve India’s problems and urges careful consideration.

Ottawa January 30 Canadian Press report says coal oil poured onto a stove to hasten a cooking fire started a blaze in the farmhouse of Donald E Campbell near Thurso Quebec. Verda Campbell age one died in hospital from severe burns and Gerald Campbell age two died while being carried to an Ottawa train.
Washington January 30. The first Canadian Prime Minister Bennett arrived in Washington for talks with high U.S. officials. He seeks a formal discussion on Canada United States relations and prefers no public display or gun salute despite being entitled to one.
Winnipeg January report states railways promise reductions on cattle shipments in place of a six months lay off requested by producers. Minister of Agriculture Robert Weir said railways agreed to a four cent freight rate per producer, with a goal of one dollar per car load less. Weir spoke after a tour of the West and a stop in Winnipeg before continuing to Ottawa.
The text recalls a 1913 agreement between Medicine Hat, Hanna, and the Canadian Northern Railway to build a branch line, tied to a Dominion Government pledge.
