Reports from Shanghai describe Japanese naval forces initiating occupation at midnight with 1000 marines advancing in the northern city. Heavy bombardment followed on the Woosung fort as clashes erupted near the international settlement.
Prime Minister J B Hertzog announced in the legislative assembly that the Union of South Africa will uphold the gold standard. He moved to appoint a select committee to review whether welfare requires maintaining gold backing, denying fears the standard would be abandoned.
Frontier L O L No. 1949 held its regular meeting on the 95th inst. After business, members gathered for a Burns Night banquet with W M J M Burden presiding. J Lorraine spoke on Immortal Memory outlining Burns as nature lover, philosopher, liberty champion, humorist and poet of the people, followed by discussion and plans for lodge improvements. New officers for 1932 were installed including W M J Burden, Sec J Storraine, Treas W B Dempster, and other leaders.
The Medicine Hat Poultry and Pet Stock Association opened its annual show on Third Street with judge T J Timms of Calgary praising the high standard. Top prizes include the Special Killing Challenge Cup won by F S Wetherall Calgary and the Medicine Hat News Cup awarded to T Kinvig for a Partridge Rocks cock. Numerous awards cover White Leghorns Barred Rocks Partridge Rocks and many breeds with W Lawson Redcliff ChinChilla rabbits and local figures among winners.
Isaac Doze a Smoky Lake farmer was nominated Liberal candidate at a convention in St Paul. The by election occurs in March to fill the J. F. Buckley seat. Hon Charles Stewart attended and spoke. Conservatives planned to nominate a candidate today.
Edmonton Jan 27 Colin Groff provincial publicity commissioner has been approved for the post of acting librarian. An order in council is drafted and will be signed. The publicity commissioner's branch moves from the Department of Agriculture to the Executive Council. The change combines publicity and government advertising under one office as part of economy. Groff's headquarters move to Jaffray's former office.
Seattle municipal street railway employees vote to strike if pay warrants are not cashed by next Tuesday. The Car Men's Union announced the decision after warrants were issued three days earlier with funds frozen to meet international bond payments.
Grain inspections in Winnipeg on Wednesday show 484 cars inspected, well above last year’s 206. Breakdowns include contract 399 cars, 73 other grains, barley 32, flax 2, rye 5, and 0 for unspecified other grains.
Jarl Grubbstrom and W. H. Cross from Montreal to Victoria landed at Medicine Hat airport at 12 40 pm today and departed at 1 30 pm for Lethbridge. In Lethbridge they would choose Nelson as tonight's destination or stay over at Fernie British Columbia.
Edmonton January 27 Officials of the agriculture department aid Peace River farmers to select grain for a 1,500,000 bushel order with Alberta. Saskatchewan Grain Purchasing Commission expects to bring about 500000 dollars to the province. Grain will be No 1 2 and 3 Northern priced at 29 cents a bushel fob Peace River.
