Moon dogs lit the night sky in a vivid display peak around 11 p.m. two rainbow halos shone in the southeast from about 7 p.m. until fading behind thin cirrus clouds. The phenomenon, not linked to weather, is caused by moonlight refraction on ice particles aloft. such brilliance has not been seen here since 1934.
Frost bitten and with a numb trigger finger, 28 year old Howard Bernard, an escapee from jail, was captured today in a Neuville area farm house after a siege by about fifty officers. Firemen battled bullets and tear gas as Bernard died in the exchange. the Moreau family misled by gunfire were driven from their home.

In Ottawa A. A. Heaps of the C C F urged Canada to press President Roosevelt for an international peace conference. In Washington Representative Fish of the Foreign Affairs committee introduced a resolution asking Roosevelt to call such a conference at the earliest possible date.
Ottawa protests Senator Ellender accusation over Canada 85 million dollar refunding bond issue. Finance Minister C A Dunning says Canada is not in default and was not treated as a British empire counterpart in the Johnson Act opinion. He notes U S State Department and Attorney General statements on the matter.
Winnipeg January 27 The operation of a Canadian Wheat Board for farmers wishing to market their grain was urged by R S Law president of the United Grain Growers Limited in testimony to the Turgeon Royal Grain Commission. He also pressed consideration of appointing a supervisor for the Winnipeg Grain Exchange as proposed by the 1931 Stamp commission.
Premier John Bracken announced today that D A Skelton chief of the research department of the bank would lead Saskatchewan Bee investigations into national finance matters. The release clarified the Saskatchewan focus diverges from Alberta concerns.
Calgary finance committee to meet in special session to review an amended debt plan for the city’s 17 192 000 capital debentures. The proposal, reached after talks with a Eastern bondholders representative, lowers interest on all five per cent bonds to four and a half per cent and extends call after 101 years, with a reduced city debt levy. Mayor Davison announced the plan and its terms.
The Local Council of Women held its annual meeting on Friday January 22. Reports from affiliated groups included the WCTU YWCA Travellers Aid and Literary Society. Officers for 1937 were adopted with thanks to the retiring president and others. Mrs. F G Grevett of Calgary spoke on National Council work and urged continued council efforts. Edmonton January 27 The death toll rises after a Canadian Pacific Railway passenger coach plunged down an incline into the Poplar Creek bed near Breton about 50 miles southwest of Edmonton. F W Bacher Lavesta postmaster Ontario Joseph Bauer 48 Ontario died from shock A Joan West 10 Winfield girl suffered concussion and is hospitalized Thirteen others were treated and released while 220 were injured or hospitalized with varying injuries The crash occurred about 30 minutes after the coach somersaulted down the incline.
