On January 26 1776 the U S Congress ratified the appointment of Eustache Chartier de Lobbiniere as first chaplain of the U S Army. The Canadian Red Ensign gained official recognition before Canada adopted the Maple Leaf in 1965. The Apollo Theatre in Harlem opened as a black artists showcase with Ralph Cooper Aida Ward Benny Carter and 16 dancers in the opening night lineup.

Fort Macleod RCMP confirm two Foothills Detox Centre employees died by gunshot in a murder death by own action. Wendy Truscott age 52 from Fort Macleod and Cecil Holywhiteman age 59 from Standoff were dating colleagues who recently split. Bodies found at a home Sunday evening. A neighbour reported a frightened girl witnessing Truscott shot.

Men sentenced for jail beating in Winnipeg Remand Centre
