A fire at 364 Kipling Street Thursday afternoon destroyed a work shed at Kimmitt Concrete. Loss estimated at 6000 dollars. Ludwig Berath, 825 Fourth Street SE, says a gasoline ignition started by his pant leg while cleaning a carburetor. He escaped major burns, hair singed. stove nearby. Shed insured for 500, contents for 1000.
A slight warming trend failed to arrive in Medicine Hat as temperatures plunged to 26 degrees below zero Thursday night. By 7 am the reading had risen to 15 below zero with a 18 mph southwest wind, effectively 44 below. By 11 am it stood at nine below with a north-northwest wind. Tonight and Saturday forecast 20 to 30 below in western Alberta and Saskatchewan. Medicine Hat may dip to 25 below with a zero high Saturday. Roads mostly open but loose snow raises sudden hazards per Alberta Motor Association.
Mrs. J. E. Mader of Banff sent Mayor Harry Weiner a $25 donation to hire a veterinarian for humane disposal of about a dozen stray cats. Alderman Miller noted the vet advised electrocution as part of a mercy program, informing the mayor at a finance committee meeting.

Coroner Jack White orders an inquest into a Tuesday 5 a.m. head on collision on the Trans-Canada Highway about 13 miles west of Maple Creek. One woman, Veronica Mc Bride of Winnipeg, died. A Calgary bound transport truck driver Nick David and passenger Ardyin Beeter were uninjured. Mrs Mc Bride’s brother Edward Coleman, visiting from England, is hospitalized in Maple Creek Union Hospital, condition stated satisfactory.
Ottawa CP Canada trade with Communist nations is in personal crisis stupidity says Social Credit Leader Robert Thompson. He warns in a Commons foreign policy debate that we are blinded by profit motive and political expediency and risk trading ourselves into defeat and slavery. The issue is seen as more critical than nuclear arms. Thompson is joined by Paul Martin and T C Douglas in the discussion.
The city’s finance committee recommended awarding the bid to the second lowest after Beny Motors and Central Motors failed to meet the specifications for nine trucks and two cars. Bids ranged from 18 207 to 22 729 with trade-in allowances. An addendum clarified the required alternator model Leese Neville No 6026AA and bid submission rules.
Police linked a rash of car thefts in Medicine Hat to two juveniles after Dr. Francis Adams of Redcliff reported his vehicle stolen from a local hotel. A patrol spotted the suspects' car on the Hilda Schuler Highway with a driver obscured by a parka top and two visible eyes, revealing the vehicle as Adams's.
