City of Medicine Hat plans cuts to its energy division as oil and gas prices slump. Officials say there will be no major layoffs and emphasis remains on gas production. The energy committee discussed options at a closed meeting with final drafts due Feb. 2 and council in session Feb. 17. Oil prices have fallen about half since June, trading near 47 dollars per barrel.
Alberta Health Services recommended Tamiflu for seniors in assisted living facilities amid flu outbreaks. The drug was prescribed by physicians and paid for by taxpayers with 2,564 seniors in the South Zone alone. Officials note costs vary and that residents may opt out.
Melissa Cassidy, 32, pleaded guilty to trafficking marijuana linked to the Medicine Hat Remand Centre probe. Police observed Cassidy hand two marijuana packages and cash to corrections officer Ricki Fehr at a truck stop during an October 2013 operation. Fehr, 25, and Cassidy were arrested October 29, 2013, with 54 grams of marijuana, tobacco, and $1,000 seized.
