Hamilton Ont January 24 Revenue Minister Gibson called inflation the most iniquitous form of taxation and urged borrowing as the sole remedy to Canada’s financial woes. He warned inflation offers a superficial appeal as a way to raise funds while addressing the Canadian Manufacturers’ Association.
Romania's council of ministers pledges severe punishment for Horia Sima and other Iron Guard leaders amid the blood rebellion against Antonescu. The Bucharest radio says the army seeks the rebels as military courts prepare trials within 24 hours of arrest and immediate executions after sentences. German sources hint at possible protectorate or occupation of Romania to secure oil and agricultural exports.

British and Imperial Army of the Nile report capturing Tobruk and over 20,000 Italian troops, halting westward advance in Northern Libya. Italians retreat on the Sudan Eritrea front while Ethiopian patrols inflict light casualties. RAF strikes hit Sciascimanna airfield and four Italian planes were destroyed on the ground. In Libya, Appolonia Derna and Marau bombed with fires visible 35 miles away.
Bad weather kept Royal Air Force planes from operating over Germany last night. Conditions were cloudy and cold with a reading of 821 noted in the report.
The Italian Libyan force under Marshal Graziani loses power after Tobruk. Up to 100000 Fascist officers and men, including generals and an admiral, become British prisoners. Estimated combat effectives drop to about 75000 with disintegrated front lines at Sidi Barrani, Bardia, and Tobruk.

A Harvard trainer from No. 32 Service Flying Training School crashed four miles south of Moose Jaw injuring no one else. Flying Officer Rich, 29, and Leading Aircraftman J H Morgan, 20, died. An RCAF investigation was announced. The pair were unmarried and the weather was poor with heavy snow.

Smith Falls Ontario police recaptured German prisoner Otto Hollman after he forced a train window for a brief break for freedom. Two more prisoners believed to be among the train’s detainees were being sought in town and surrounding farms as railway and military police conducted searches.
Central News reports that Chinese mines in the Yangtse river below Hankow sank a small gun boat and a large steamship on January 17, with about 260 Japanese killed or drowned.

London report states 56 year old Prof Arthur Lloyd James pleaded not guilty to murdering his wife on January 14. He was committed for trial at the next criminal court session.
Viscount Halifax the new British ambassador to Washington and Lady Halifax likely land today at Annapolis from the battleship King George V. Canada’s supply minister C D Howe, torpedoed on a prior crossing, is aboard with his party. President Roosevelt arrives at Annapolis to greet the envoy en route to Washington.
The Medicine Hat Chamber of Commerce will host an annual horse sale on Thursday March 13 featuring at least 300 horses led by J W Durne of Calgary. The group also discussed an Edmonton College of Agriculture letter on Net Necrosis in potatoes and plans for further trials with disease resistant seed. Discussion covered Bow River water rights for the Redcliff Ronolane irrigation scheme and a letter to the Vauxhall district Board of Trade offering Chamber assistance on wheat and other problems. Reports say the 30 day training period could be extended to three or four months, with final word after his war committee briefing.
District Recruiting Office M D 13 announces a recruiting officer will attend at the Canadian Legion hall in Medicine Hat on Monday January 27 at 1 30 p m to assess trade IQs and conduct Medical Board for tradesmen of all descriptions for all branches. Accepted men must be ready to depart on the 2 30 a m train Tuesday morning.
A two hour blaze in Dublin Castle destroyed the Ministry of Commerce offices and threatened nearby residences. Firefighters contained the fire after it started early today and was reported by a newspaper messenger delivering copy to the censorship offices.
