Abstract of receipts and expenditures for Medicine Hat up to December 1, 1900. Auditors W M Gray and H W Treland report books correct with a cash balance on hand of 2.91 dollars. Included are scattered figures and balances totaling the town accounts.
Regular town council meeting notes reads and filings include requests from Public Works on ferry plans, fire and water committee referrals, salary and licensing discussions, and numerous municipal job applications. Finance and Well committees reported on purchases and supplies. auditor’s report to end of year adopted. several licenses debated and tabled.
Telegraphs announce the death of Queen Victoria at Osbourne Castle. Monarchy mourns as public buildings fly flags to half mast. Emperor William and royal family present. Nation recalls her virtues and liberal rule shaping the empire. Queen dies at 6 55 Greenwich time ending a revered reign.
The minutes show extensive by law actions and appointments including Town Clerk as secretary treasurer and Police, Health, and Building Inspector appointments. Arguments on borrowing authority and gas piping for Main Street are noted with tabled motions and notices of motion. The council discusses streets, payments, and a gas proposal to supply hospital fuel via buried pipes with safeguards.
The Board of Trade of Medicine Hat met in the Assiniboia hotel with President Fewings in the chair. Officials presented the annual report, noting by laws read and passed, and cited work including water access, attracting the Western Canada Woolen Mills Co., and efforts to designate Medicine Hat as a customs port of entry.
