Medicine Hat hosts its third annual artificial ice bonspiel at Arena Gardens with 70 rinks entered for a $3,000 prize event. Mayor Hector Lang opened the event, first games began at 7 30, second round at 10, with two hour draw changes and around the clock curling for at least two days.
Russian officials disrupted truck traffic between West Germany and Berlin and delayed three US military trains at Helmstedt by up to six hours over protests over papers involving non American travelers. Traffic bottlenecks appeared at Telmstedt and Lübeck while a Berlin railway building seizure with German police prompted delays.
Snow and subzero conditions grip Alberta with readings as low as 45 below at Grande Prairie. Calgary and Edmonton report 26 to 25 below, while roads freeze and travel warnings rise. In Vancouver area a second cold snap follows thaw risks as a child dies from falling ice and trains stranded by slides are slowly cleared.
Ottawa reports two Canadian commissioned officers Sel Danko and Cpla G Vanier on the staff of the air attaché at the Canadian Legation in Prague were expelled for alleged espionage. Officials view the move as part of a Russian backed push and consider retaliation against Czech representatives in Canada.
Two men missing and feared drowned after an engine on the Pacific Great Eastern Railway struck a rock slide and plunged into Seton Lake near SELLOOUT B C. Albert Knapp, 18, was arrested after police said he broke into the home of Harry Gatok, set fires to the porch and kitchen walls, smashed a back door, and forced a man, four women, and a child to evacuate. A neighbor summoned the RCMP. officers extinguished the flames.
Ottawa Justice Minister Stuart Garson announced informations filed January 20 against seven Alberta bread companies for alleged infractions of the Combines Investigation Act. Summons issued January 21 returnable January 30. prosecutions led by the federal government. The named firms include Avarif Bakeries Ltd Mc Gavin Ltd Dominion incorporation Mc Gavin Ltd Westons Bread and Cake Company Canada Ltd Canadian Bakeries Ltd Edmonton City Baking Company Ltd and the Bakery Employees Association of Alberta. Most operations are in Alberta but may extend to British Columbia Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
Dr Paul Harvey and three nurses from Edmonton's Charles Camsell Indian Hospital were flown to Aklavik NWT to assist Dr A Ward and local mission nurses in fighting a measles outbreak in Arctic Indigenous communities along the Mackenzie River delta. The team aims to curb spread by delivering measles serum, food drops, and medical care as outbreaks strain local facilities.
CPR official N R Crump reports Western coal demand rising as dieselization grows, noting interest in jet gas turbine engines that could burn coal if developed. He says mountain service may adopt turbines alongside steam to extend coal and Alberta oil use, with 1,800 steam engines remaining in operation.
