A new, younger diver arrived at Lake Muskoka to aid in recovering airmen from a December plane crash. Dennis Coffey assisted after fainting during earlier attempts. a Royal Canadian Air Force service member withheld his name. The crash is believed to hold Frt. Sgt. Leo Francis and LAC W. Gosling.
Britain lost nine merchant ships totaling 30,226 tons in the week ending Jan. 12, the Admiralty reported. The losses are well below the high averages seen during the submarine campaign in July. No Allied or neutral merchant shipping was lost that week.

Trade Minister MacKinnon announced that on Thursday representatives of Western grain handling organizations will meet with the cabinet wheat committee the Wheat Board and the Board of Grain Commissioners. Western elevator companies have considered adding storage space for 1940 era and 1941 42, with proposals to be reviewed by the government which is studying the storage situation.

David Lloyd George was reported in road mishaps on the way to Criccieth Wales where his wife Dame Margaret died before he reached her bedside. Near Carrig y Druidion his car struck obstructions and Home Guards helped him from the car to a village hotel. One paper said he was shaken severely but he planned to continue to Criccieth by train for the funeral. He observed his 78th birthday four days ago.
A local bowling alley license is noted and a School Board request for stop signs near Elizabeth Street School is referred to the police committee for action.
Premier Aberhart salutes Ontario Premier Hepburn for backing Dominion currency issuance to fund wartime needs. He calls Hepburn’s monetary reform stance at the Ottawa conference “masterly” and says he has high praise for Hepburn’s position, though not in consultation.
Dr W W Cross Alberta health and relief minister says Ottawa gave no hint of changes to direct relief grants next fiscal year. He expects 40-40-20 financing: federal 40 per cent, province 40 per cent, municipalities 20 per cent. He cites plans to appoint contact men at military depots to aid discharged soldiers in finding work or returning home.
