Women to receive pensions under new Canada plan

About 500000 taxpayers, mostly women who work for spouses, would gain Canada Pension Plan benefits on retirement under amendments to a broad income tax bill. Inquiry cites need for patient access to medical information in fatality case

Provincial court Judge Dietrich Brand urged a system to ensure patients learn about medical conditions amid liability concerns after Medicine Hat woman Elsie Nowak died weeks after a surgical sponge was left inside her. The inquiry recommended referring such cases to an uninvolved party to protect team care. Nowak, 67, learned of the sponge only days before her death on January 6, 1980, following an August 1979 operation for rectal cancer at Medicine Hat and District Hospital.

Doctor Dispute Over Admitting Role and Sponge Error

On Oct 23 1980 the testimony details that Chabra referred Nowaks questions to Cowan before a sponge was removed. Cowan oversaw admission arrangements while hospital records show conflicting admitting doctor designations. Judge Brand urged clearer doctor roles and tighter sponge count procedures after concluding Nowaks death was accidental from pulmonary embolism linked to infection and a surgical sponge.

City hall plan trimmed to four storeys in Medicine Hat

City council approved a report for a new city hall of about 8,370 square metres in Medicine Hat to be four to four and a half storeys on First Street S.E. with underground levels and about 50 underground parking stalls. The project includes a neighboring cultural centre and a long term plan for expansion on south side parking. The city will hire Stevens Graham MacConnell Milton Partners and Henry Hawthorne to design the cultural centre, with a contract around 700000 to 881250 dollars. Construction is targeted for completion by July 1983.

Calgary bank hostage crisis ends as captor freed

In Calgary the hostage standoff concluded peacefully after Thaddeus Drabick, 50, released Mark Pollard, 32, from a northeast Calgary house. Drabick faces two kidnapping charges and a firearm offense. his lawyer requested time to consult before entering a plea.
