New York AP reports six federal jurors ruled on Friday that Time magazine's 1983 story defaming Ariel Sharon was not true in alleging he discussed revenge with Lebanese Christian leaders the day before a massacre of Palestinian civilians.
Ottawa Health Minister Jake Epp announced that family allowances and old age security pensions will not be changed in the social policy review. He said no benefits will be taxed away and savings from other reforms will be reinvested in programs. Changes could come in an options paper January 28 and possibly in the budget speech late April. The move drew praise from Liberal and NDP pensions critics.
Liberal Leader John Turner told about 450 Alberta Liberals at a $150 plate dinner that the party’s revival will be rooted in the West. He urged grass roots organizing after a disappointing 12.7 percent Alberta vote share and two Western seats last September. Turner will spend time in the Prairie provinces as he travels from Ottawa toward Vancouver Quadra.

Three senior Cairo staff have been recalled as an internal audit notes discrepancies and possible reimbursements, with no confirmation of disciplinary action.
Radical PQ delegates led by Camille Laurin walked out shouting Quebec Our Country as they protested Premier Rene Levesque dropping independence from the party platform. The walkout came after a two to one defeat of the pro sovereignty stance with 1,500 delegates present.
