A jail riot erupted at the Fort Saskatchewan provincial jail near Edmonton with a bakery fire suspected to be set deliberately. RCMP units and firefighters were dispatched as about 500 inmates were held at the facility. details remain scarce and authorities declined to comment.
Police hold construction worker Joseph de Maio after a New Jersey stop on the Windsor Locks murder case. Celia J. Cienski, 20, was found in an ice rimmed canal. de Maio claimed the assault while Celia resisted and fled. Gerald J. Celetti, 34, remained at large on related charges.
Toronto police said a forged vacation paybook cashing error halted a spread of a $150000 swindle. Frank Deshevy, 33, was jailed six months after pleading guilty to cashing a paybook on November 26. Several co-conspirators were already tied to 14 convictions, with two arrests in Winnipeg and books worth 100 to 150 dollars each.
