Wellington Jan 19. The Forbes cabinet raised the New Zealand pound to 125 to 100 pounds sterling. Banks oppose but will cooperate. The move aims to aid exporters and will cut customs duties on empire imports to mitigate effects. Government plans include lower interest rates and reduced production costs for farmers.
Brandon Baptist College will receive ongoing support from the Baptist Union of Western Canada as delegates urged reaffirming faith in the college. The union agreed to contribute 2500 dollars annually and assist in raising funds to cover a 1933 deficit of about 7000 dollars amid a total revenue of 89370 and expenditures of 97075. Winnipeg notes follow with Wednesday inspections and grain prices for wheat oats barley rye.
Deaths from influenza in England and Wales numbered 1,041 last week, rising from 681 the week before. In Swansea all schools will close tomorrow due to the spread, with Peterborough and several other towns already taking similar action.

Geneva on January 19 The matter of inter government debts was left out of the program of the World Economic Conference today but experts preparing the agenda declared this question must be settled before economic and financial reconstruction can be realized. The preparatory committee adopting the annotated agenda recommended a return to the gold standard by nations that departed from it and measures to provide greater freedom for international trade.
Cleveland January 19 Dr Arthur L Morgan president of Antioch College said 500000 to 1000000 Americans earn their livelihood through commodity and service exchanges and scrip plans He noted a movement to organize these groups into a national emergency exchange and that hundreds of cities are preparing to issue scrip under varied plans Morgan argued scrip is sound if well managed
Captain J A Mollison flies from London to Ireland to ready a trans Atlantic attempt toward South America. The move mirrors his historic 50th westward Atlantic crossing to North America. Mollison had planned to join the Northern Africa search for Lady Bailey but altered plans after speaking with Lady Rossmore.
Delegates at the Dominion provincial conference voted unanimously to draft a uniform Companies Act for the provinces and Dominion. Backed by a Canadian Bar Association resolution, the measure aims to curb evasive incorporations, harmonize provincial and Dominion rules, and curb charter shifting. Calgary January 19 delegates from the UFA UFWA federal and provincial associations totaling more than 300 voted unanimously to affiliate with the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. President Gardiner spoke for the resolution stating the UFA would retain autonomy. The federation would operate for one year under provisional bylaws with no new party formed. Debt collection measures were also approved by the conference.
Seach continues for Lady Mary Bailey and Bert Hinkler as French planes scour Algeria Morocco and nearby regions. Bailey, missing since a England to South Africa record attempt, was found safe after a forced landing in Tahoua. Hinkler remains missing days after starting a recapture bid.
The United Farmers of Alberta endorsed a Canadian livestock barter with Russia involving oil and coal. The plan aims to boost farmer returns by exporting up to one hundred thousand cattle, largely beef and some dairy stock, in exchange for Soviet oil and coal bonds redeemable as shipments arrive.
