At Edmonton the United Farmers of Alberta convention closed with a near fight as Rice Sheppard and others argued over abolishing provincial labor bureaus. A proposed U F A controlled newspaper for legislature coverage was also debated amid laughter and sharp exchanges.
London January 18. J Bromley, enginemen’s leader, said the executive would strike as planned Saturday midnight while a National Union of Railwaymen circular denounced the move as a grave blunder. The missive warned members not to refuse work or act against the signature of union leaders.
Sixteen year old Stewart Godwin of Little River is set for a preliminary hearing Tuesday morning. He will be charged with the murder of Mrs. Clara Whiteside whose body was found beaten at her East St John home on Christmas night, the police say he confessed and he is believed to be mentally deficient.
A. Tanner of Montreal returned to Ottawa after nine months away to find the house he built there missing lock, stock and barrel. He had left Ottawa last May after purchasing a plot and erecting a building, then boarded it up in Montreal. Police are investigating the theft.
Montreal dispatch reports District 26 miners of UMWA refuse to return to Cape Breton pits without a one or two year contract and a wage increase. Silby Barrett, provisional district president, says negotiations may open only if the company initiates a new conference. Barrett also states he did not take Premier Armstrong seriously.
Raleigh reports that the British schooner Kwasind with 2218 cases of liquor, distressed at Oak Island harbor December 2, will be returned to Captain J Thomas Popham and escorted to the three mile limit to resume voyage to Halifax, Vancouver. Weather summaries for Edmonton Calgary Winnipeg and other cities note cold fronts and continued fair to cloudy skies with varying temperatures.
Lethbridge January 19 Unprecedented development in Alberta oil fields from Wainwright to the border is predicted for spring and summer by Mark C Rogers president of the Canadian Oil and Refining company. He says operations will continue on acreage at the border and in the new field northeast of Medicine Hat and south of the Wainwright field. Rogers notes drilling at the border resumes after a boiler delay and eight days of land travel to place it. He foresees good progress toward completing the well and mentions funds raised in the east for development.
The British steamship Lime Branch of 5300 tons gross, sailing from Antwerp via London and Cardiff to Valparaiso, sent a wireless appeal for help about 200 miles southwest of Cape Clear. The vessel reported loss of its propeller and a rudder that's unshipped as strong westerly gales blow.
Winnipeg reports yesterday’s wheat inspections reached 647 cars with 443 off contract grades, up from 350 cars the previous year. Coarse grains totaled 149 cars, compared with 159 last year.
London reports indicate a potential delay to the locomotive firemen strike if railway managers agree to defer the new wage scale from the Railway Wages Board. The threat looms as engineers and firemen prepare to strike at midnight, with public sympathy seen as low for this dispute.
Brigadier General Smedley J. Butler led a 48 hour drive against lawlessness in Philadelphia. A major blaze struck the Brandon Brewing Company bottling works and offices last night as a twelve below zero wind whipped through the city. Firemen battled the fire all night, hydrant tops blew off, and a nearby house was flooded by the cold. Officials could not determine the fire's origin this morning.
At Niagra Falls a workman named Anthony Steffano fell 300 feet when the rope lowering him down the cliff broke. He died instantly at Queenstown peaver house on January 19.
Dr. WH Jalmard Schacht head of the Reich Bank and German currency commissioner was invited by the expert committee to Paris for its examination of Germanys finances. He arrived today and will be heard by the committee this afternoon.
Reporting from Mexico City on January 19 says revolutionary forces on the Vera Cruz front refuse to press a decisive battle while the Jalisco front shows no notable activity. In Bisbee Arizona the same date places 1500 Mexican troops at Naco awaiting authorization to move into the United States, equipped with Springfield and Enfield rifles and large ammunition stores carried by the troop train.
Alberta’s Fars Women at the convention endorsed forming an egg and poultry marketing pool despite opposition from Agriculture Minister George Hoadley and R. Reid. They argued for cooperative marketing, education, and local organization before pursuing a central government backed pool, citing climate and distance challenges in Alberta.
Dusty, Wane, Jan. 18. With Howard Carter today removing the third shrine of Tutankhamen, the outer casket is slid aside and the inner side shows five hawks with wings spread. The carvings depict hunting scenes. the second shrine remains in place as Carter works to gain space for removal. Chicago, arriving for the cantephagua opening, notes the nacelle when the panels are dismantled, archives this morning.
New Orleans January 18 The $11 million damage suit of Edward Huff of Miami against Ford Meter Company Detroit is a matter of legacy which a judge and jury might decide United States circuit court of appeals held today. Holt in the employ years ago invented the fly wheel magneto promoting it with the Detroit concern The company paid him 10 000 in January 1908 and promised a royalty of 2 50 for each magneto but no royalties were received and the Florida court awarded 71 000 000.
Moscow January 19 The Supreme Court commuted death sentences for General Semen tovanky and M Melikih who were found guilty of maltreating prisoners during the Cuer Lee regime. They received ten years' imprisonment for atrocities tied to the prison regime before the revolution.
