Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens hosts a goaltender duel as Harry Lumley and Terry Sawchuk keep the arena scoreless. Detroit leads the NHL with 10 points over Toronto, while New York Rangers beat Boston 2-1 at Madison Square Garden.
Jones boys and Calumet loom large with Duke's Lea a promising contender trained by Ben and Jimmie Jones and ridden by Eddie Arcaro. After three straight wins and a late charge last Tuesday, the Calumet colt must prove his form at Santa Anita ahead of the Kentucky Derby.
Lightweight champion Jimmy Carter of New York will meet Paddy De marco of Brooklyn in a 15 round title bout at Madison Square Garden on March 5. A return bout is planned within 90 days if De marco wins. Carter's ninth title defense follows his 1951 win over Ike Williams.
The sixth largest daily double in Hialeah Park history paid out on Wednesday. Wing Kitty earned 173.50 and Lightning Will 26.90 on a $2 ticket for a total payoff of 1199.60. Hialeah’s earlier record double was 2691.00 on February 19, 1947. The all time daily double record 10772.40 occurred at Washington Park on August 14, 1939.
David Mackinnon, 29, collapsed of a heart attack seconds after scoring a goal for Dedham in a North Shore League semi final against Lynnfield. He fell at center ice and died en route to the hospital.

Walter L. Eddy 60, a former boxing contender known as Young Eddy from Greenwich Connecticut, was killed near Wadley Georgia in an automobile accident Tuesday while driving with his wife to Florida for a vacation.
Tommy Burns, the only Canadian to win the world heavyweight title, now pursues evangelism and charity work. The Hanover Ontario native born Noah Brusso in 1881 says his life aims to help the sick and needy, leaving boxing behind despite early fame and a love of people. Burns describes boxing as vicious and still occasionally watches old fights on television. He spoke in Toronto at a sports writers dinner.
