War Supply Board awarded 343 contracts valued at 1 145 721 during the week ended Jan 18. Of this sum 829 210 is for clothing including 55 000 sweat shirts 40 000 blouses and 10 000 pairs of trousers. Foodstuffs total 355 360. Most money spent in Canada with one order from the British War Office. Western Canada firms listed for contracts above 5 000 include General Paint Corporation of Canada Ltd Vancouver 10 002 A P Slade Ltd Victoria 7 503 Burns and Co Calgary 20 967 Western Grocer Calgary 5 302 and The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Ltd 25 800.
London dispatch reports Prime Minister Lloyd George marking his 17th birthday with a remark inspired by Renan. He said he had enjoyed wealth through life but warned that commenting on today’s European situation would compel him to withdraw that statement.
Ottawa January 18 Hon Lucien Maynard Alberta minister of municipal affairs said negotiations on a charter for an Alberta provincial bank are complete. He will report the discussions to Premier Aberhart for further action.

Norway suffered two sinkings including the 1590 ton Vagerheim with 14 missing. the 2342 ton August Thysseh sank near the Aland Islands after hitting a mine. Cairnross rescued crew after mine damage and sinking.
Ottawa reports Hon. Charles Dunning praises Canadians for subscribing to the first Dominion war loan. He notes subscriptions surpassed 25 percent of the 200 million goal and explains why books stay open for small investors in remote districts. He urges timely participation.

Quebec January 18 brigadier E J Renaud said the early morning fire at a vacant military hospital might have been set. A military court of inquiry was announced to investigate the blaze as firemen battled smouldering interiors in sub zero weather.
Five people died and an undisclosed number were injured in a series of blasts at the royal gun powder factory in Waltham Abbey. Police ruled out enemy action as flames engulfed the plant and smoke rose over northern London. Two other English accidents killed three more and wounded several soldiers.
