The Medicine Hat Trading, Co. Ltd. reports receipt of a large stock of curtains in all colours with fringe options plus curtain poles and fixtures. Also Chinelle Damask Derby and Rep curtains in varied styles and shades and a fine assortment of Chinelle and Damask table covers in all styles and shades.
Our stock of staple groceries is fresh and complete. A large stock of Lake of the Woods flour, oats and feed stuff, coarse and rock salt. A few geese left at 12 1/2 cents per pound. Five percent discount on cash purchases of dry goods and boots and shoes. Sole agents for Mazawattee Tea.
The White Pharmacy promises a record year with Good Goods Cleanliness and attentive service. It notes fair prices and sharing profits with customers. A 20 percent discount on Hair Brushes and 10 percent on Briar Pipes are offered for the rest of the week.
Telegraphic dispatches from London and Cape Town report Kruger urging burghers to front lines, Boer commando actions, and Buller’s forces in Natal with advancing lines near Ladysmith. Updates note logistic efforts, Lady Smith morale, and possible reinforcements as rumors swirl.
Mayor Finlay acknowledges a contribution for Medicine Hat’s Western Contingent members. Letters from Regina dated January 10 1900 and from Bank Rackes dated January 14 1900 thank him and promise funds noted for distribution and Western Dominion service. A theater event by Coontown 400 Co and Burns supper are announced in Maple Creek with entertainment and charity aims.
Regular meeting of the Medicine Hat Town Council notes adoption of prior minutes and readings of communications. Motions authorize fire by law and licensing measures, appoint Geo. P. Thomas as Town Solicitor, reappoint W. N. Adsit, discuss boarding houses and restaurants, and plan a future fire brigade meeting with notices.
The 1890 Principal's report shows 212 days of school, two terms totaling 212 days, 350 pupils enrolled (180 boys and 170 girls), and an average daily attendance of 226. Dismissals were none.
A long list of donors from Regina Moose Jaw and Medicine Hat contributes to Medicine Hat General Hospital and the waterworks plant. Names include J C Pope P Burns Co Dixon Bros H W Fanguter D Burgess J Drary J Thornp n and many others with amounts from 1 to 25 dollars. The waterworks donations from Moose Jaw also appear with numerous contributors and sums.
London reports Buller's crossing of the Tugela and a successful advance on the Boer positions near Colenso and Potgier's Drift. Warren and Littleton divisions pressed each flank as British actions continue around Sproenkop and Swartze Kop. Separate dispatches note Methuen's demonstrations near Molteno and Mafeking relief efforts.
An East bound train on Saturday January 6 carried eleven Maple Creek volunteers to serve in South Africa. The party included six policemen and five civilians led by Calaghan and Drury. A large Maple Creek crowd and brass band farewells accompanied the sendoff with a purse of 154 dollars per man and two boxes of cigars.
A meeting is expected to be called soon to organize a rifle association. Plans outline forming a new group, inviting interested locals to join and establish a club with shared sporting aims.
